The Glow Up by A.M. Johnson
Franklin University Series, Book 5
Chris Delaney
I’ve promised myself that this was going to be the year to finally buckle down. I’m a junior, and I’ve settled on a major. I’ve got focus and determination. The one thing I haven’t figured out yet? How to deal with the massive crush I’ve been harboring on the guy in study carrel six.
I don’t know his name and some of my friends think it’s time for me to move on, but he has this whole sexy, broody, dark eyes and messy hair thing going for him. And yeah, he seems like he could be my polar opposite. The kind of unapproachable, serious type who doesn’t smile much, but I’d like to think he’s all rays of sunshine underneath his stormy expressions and disheveled demeanor. All that intense energy… I dig it.
I want to know him.
The rub?
I’ll have to find the courage to actually introduce myself.
Aiden Russo
The college experience is supposed to be parties, drinking, and fun with a few classes mixed in. It sounds pretty amazing, right? For me, it turned out to be endless lectures, avalanches of homework, and copious amounts of caffeine. The study carrel might as well be my dorm room. And that guitar under my bed? It’s got two years of dust growing on it. But this is the life I have to lead if I’m ever going to help my dad.
Pre-med isn’t for the weak.
The problem? Loneliness holds me hostage.
If only I could find someone willing to break through my ever-present cloud bank, and remind me what it’s like to have fun again.

I didn’t think I could handle more jabs before at least two more cups of caffeine.
I was ripping open a protein bar when Tommy finally graced me with his presence again. “Are you seriously pissed at me?”
“Yes… no…” I clenched my jaw. “I like Aiden, and last night might sound dumb to you… but I’ve been into the idea of him for what feels like a century, and now I’m getting to know him and he’s awesome… okay? And I liked holding his hand. I liked talking to him and getting to know him. It might not be sexy, but it’s better than pining from the goddamn rooftop.”
“You’re right.” Tommy squeezed my shoulder. “I’m an asshole.”
“Not always, I guess.”
“Thanks for the I guess.”
“Not sure you deserve it,” I mumbled before taking a bite of my breakfast bar.
He grabbed a bowl from the cabinet. “Are you guys going out again?”
“I hope so.”
Tommy opened up a box of Frosted Flakes as he spoke. “And what if you don’t?”
“Then we don’t. At least I can say I tried.”
“Fair point.”
While he busied himself cutting up a banana and plopping the pieces in his cereal, I checked my messages again while I ate, excitement and anxiety coursing through me when I saw Aiden had texted again.
Aiden: I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner with me in the dining hall sometime this week? I have a huge paper I need to finish, but I wanted to see you, and I have to eat, so I figured that could work.
Me: Yeah. I’ve got to work tomorrow, but I could meet you after.
Aiden: Sounds good. Does seven work?
Me: I’ll see you then.
He sent me a smiling face emoji that had my heart melting into a giant puddle inside my stomach. He wanted to see me. He wanted to make time for me. Maybe holding hands and deep conversations weren’t everyone’s kink. Maybe I’d allowed myself to get too wrapped up, too invested in him, but as I read over the texts, and thought about brown eyes, ocean air, and the settling grip of his soft skin against mine, I couldn’t find a reason to care.
