BLURB:

Happy Birthday, Daniel. I was told not to send you another text, but I never was any good at listening. I love and miss you. I always will.

When I lost my partner of eight years, I felt like my world was crashing down around me. In order to feel some relief from the overwhelming emptiness, I’ve found myself sending him texts every year on his birthday, even though I know he will never answer. It makes me feel like there’s a piece of him still alive, at least in my heart.

I’m sorry, you must have the wrong number. I apologize for not responding sooner, but I was at work.

That is, until someone responds to my text. Jace is charming, sweet, and everything I could ever want. But how can I accept someone new in my life when Daniel’s only been gone two years? Even so, Jace starts to consume my world. It feels like I can finally breathe as he helps me understand that my life doesn’t have to revolve around my grief.

Soon, I find myself laughing again as he pulls me away from the hopeless cycle I’ve been caught in, and I love spending time with him, whether it’s playing video games together or discussing our comic book alter egos. But I still need to let go of this guilt and allow Jace to show me that I can love another without replacing what I’ve lost. Jace rewrites my entire world with every word and smile he gives me, and it’s becoming harder to not give in and hand him my heart. Maybe Daniel did respond after all.

The Last Text is a 37k-word novella about overcoming loss, finding hope, and friendship that leads to new love.

REVIEW:

Merrick has lost his partner of many years.  They had been best friends before they were lovers.  Daniel’s family didn’t accept him and Merrick and Daniel were everything to each other.  Then Daniel was killed in a car accident and Merrick is alone.  It’s been two year and it’s Daniel’s birthday again.  So Merrick texts him to wish him a happy birthday.  He has periodically texted the number just to feel a little bit better – like he still has some connection to Daniel.  His family watches him like a hawk and plans all day activities on days that they think he might have issues – such as Daniel’s birthday and Valentine’s day – which is also their anniversary.  But this year, something strange happens after he manages to extract himself from his family’s clutches.  He gets a text back.  He knows it’s not Daniel and the guy lets him know he has the wrong number, but they end up texting.

Jace is a the perfect person to answer Merrick’s text.  He’s super nice. He’s super chill.  He volunteers to help Merrick with his computer.  When they finally meet in person, he’s cool with Merrick’s grief – meaning he understands that things are hard for him.  He’s very laid back and doesn’t push Merrick at all.  He just tries to be there for him.  Eventually Merrick lets him in and while he will never forget what he had with Daniel, he knows it’s Ok for him to move on with his life.

Honestly this was just a very beautiful, moving story.  Alice Winters is probably known more for her humor and sometimes vivid and strong personality characters.  While there is still some humor here, this book is definitely a different style than say her Hitman’s Guide or Vampire Related Crimes series.  The quiet and rather melancholy start to this story was a bit surprising, but I loved it.  Michael Ferraiuolo does his usual oustanding job of bringing the characters to life.  The secondary characters are wonderfully written as well.  Merrick’s family, Jace’s less than perfect family – but especially Jace’s grandpa.  HILARIOUS!  This is a lover tender story of finding love again after loss and allowing oneself the time and space to move at the right pace through grief.  Beautifully done and another perfect pairing of writing and narrator.  Highly recommended.
