Although I’ve performed as a musician for over forty years, I still feel nervous before every performance. I’ve clung to the saying that the time to worry is when you don’t have that reaction.
Playing in a group is easier. At least with playing violin in an orchestra I’m not in the spotlight, although there is always that fear of coming in on the general pause bar, or during a rest.
Piano is a little more nerve wracking. I still remember the advice I got from someone years ago – choose a large folder for your music so you can hide behind it!
Having been on that side of performing I’m always in awe of someone who chooses that field as a profession or gets up in front of an audience to share that side of themselves. Although I must admit, there’s a rush that comes with it, once you forget the audience and lose yourself in your craft.
When I wrote On Wings of Song I drew on some of my experiences as a rehearsal piano and band member for musical theatre. One of the shows I was involved in was based on music hall, another ANZAC, so the music of WWI, which fits in well with the time period of this story.
In this month’s performance promo, you can meet MCs across a range of performing arts. Grab some new favourites and enjoy!
On Wings of Song is on sale as part of the Performers Promotion which runs from 16-26 September.
