The monster: They say I am powerful. They say I am the darkness. They say I instill fear in the minds and hearts of many.
They’re right.
I am powerful. I am the darkness. I should be feared. Then I heard his cries and everything changed. Power can be tempered. There’s safety in the darkness. And the monster isn’t always the one under the bed.
Now only the heart and mind of one human interests me. He is mine. I wait, watching over him until the time is right to claim what belongs to me.
Austin: Do you believe there are monsters under the bed? I do. I don’t just believe; I know for a fact they exist. I’ve met one. Sort of. Okay, I haven’t actually seen the monster, I’ve only spoken to it.
Kind of hard to see much of anything when you’re hiding under the covers while waiting on your father to beat your ass. The monster saved me. Literally. He says I’m his, and he’s waiting for the right time to claim me.
Someone tell him to hurry the hell up.
REVIEW:
Austin has been waiting for something…or someone…since he was 8 years old. He’s got a lot going on in his life and he can chock it all up to the monster under his bed. Except he’s not convinced its an actual monster.
M.A. Church is a fantastic writer of supernatural stories. They excel in werewolves and other shifters. If it goes bump in the night, it seems to capture this writers imagination. How they keep coming up with such fantastic premises is a real source of envy and gratitude for me.
I don’t want to give too much away with this story because I want you to experience it just as I did. Every character is fantastically written. Hudson and Lanny are two of my favorites, but I also love the other amazing female characters.
The world that Austin lives in is just like ours, only everything that gets written about in the stories that Austin writes is real. He’s long suspected that there was something…out of the ordinary but finding out it’s all true? It’s scary as hell too. I was fascinated by his whole thinking process and how he learns to live with the strange things going on around him.
The other “hero” of our story? Mr. Tall, Dark and Terrifying? I think you’re going to love him too. He’s possessive and sweet and a lttle crazy, but mostly about Austin. He’s built himself an interesting family and our young author is the mate he’s been waiting for to make it complete.
The author’s descriptions of the places the character’s find themselves painted a beautiful picture for me and my imagination.
There’s quite a bit of sexy times in this story, but it works in this instance. It’s part of the way our two characters form their bond but it does manage to not overshadow the rest of the story. It has a few scary moments that made me catch my breath and I loved that too.
My only complaint about this story? It’s got a happy-for-now ending. It’s a kind of cliffhanger and I had no idea it was coming. If it had been an actual book instead of my Kindle app on my phone, I’d probably have thrown it in frustration!
I’ll be honest. I tend to avoid series that involve the same characters being the protagonists from story to story. I like my happy endings and seeing bits of the characters in the next book with new couples being the main point of the story. If I would have known it was a cliffhanger I probably wouldn’t have read it, but I’m glad I did. It’s a fantastic story!
However, M.A. Church may have to put up with me hounding them for the next part of the story, as I don’t have a lot of patience for waiting. I can recommend pretty much every story by this author so read this one and read some of the others while you’re waiting for the next book in the series. That’s what I’m going to do!
