Initially Dutch had wondered whether Foster was gay, but since it hadn’t mattered one way or the other, he hadn’t pursued his curiosity. But at Foster’s words, he felt a stirring of… was that hope?
“Well… Dany, who’s a good friend, married to a man. And”—he smirked, raising one eyebrow—“you said you were slow. I think I’d see you coming.”
It was a stupid joke, but it sent them both into gales of laughter. Gorp hopped up, his tail wagging as he checked first on Foster and then on Dutch as if they were behaving very strangely. Dutch laughed so hard tears ran down his face, and he had to set his beer down beside his chair so he could wipe them away. Foster was bent over his own lap, braying like a donkey as Gorp trotted back over and stuck his nose into Foster’s armpit—which made Foster jump and laugh harder.
It was nice to know Foster wasn’t entirely perfect.
“That’s…” Foster sat back up, his blue-green eyes bright with amusement. “That’s… brill… iant.” He leaned backward now, kicking his feet up, still laughing. “This… is…”
Smiling, Dutch waited patiently for whatever Foster was trying to get out between gasps for oxygen.
“Me… flirting…” he wheezed, flailing his hand around.
That set them both howling again. Dutch’s stomach muscles were working overtime, and he was pretty sure the neighbors were wondering what the hell was going on. He hadn’t laughed hard in a long time, and it felt damn good. Finally, though, he pulled himself together enough to stand up. “Stirred or shaken?” he asked Foster.
“Wha-at?” Foster said with another chortle. “Do I look like James Bond?”
Dutch shook his head, his own grin splitting his face. “You’d be the prettiest James Bond ever.”
