Famine’s choices have only ever caused suffering for those he loves. He struggles with guilt, blaming himself for what Lucifer has become. He’s certain keeping his distance is the only way he can ensure Lucifer falls no further.
But together or apart, on the same side or not, it doesn’t matter. They are forever bound, forced to endure a never-ending loop of anguish. Betrayed and surrounded by new threats, they find themselves relying on each other while battling their own demons. But soon a choice must be made: allow their love to destroy them both or embrace it before the world ends.

Famine made a small walkway through the Hellfire, pushing it out with his wisps. The dead whispered to him as they guarded him through the heat.
Lucifer’s keen eyes followed him as he approached. The edges of his cheekbones were jagged, protruding like spikes. His scaled horns were twisted and gnarled, red stains blending across their deep-red color. His arms were larger than when in his humanoid form, with large gashes up both of them. They looked less like injuries and more like accessories.
There was something raw and primal about him, something that stirred Famine’s loins and heated his blood. Every form that Lucifer possessed appealed to Famine, and this was no different. Not now that he had learned to live with it, that he had come to terms with the fact that it was part of who Lucifer now was.
Famine’s pulse sped up, and all he could think about was how much he wanted to lick a line up the spikes across Lucifer’s cheeks. He wanted to reach up and touch those horns, have them curl around him while he kissed Lucifer’s reddened lips. But he couldn’t, and he wouldn’t. Bad things happened when he gave in to the desire he had for this Being.
“Lucifer.”
Lucifer’s horns curled into themselves. “Come to finish what you started?” He tilted his scaly neck. “Well, go ahead.”
Famine internally flinched but didn’t allow it to show on his face. “You kidnapped me. What were you expecting me to do?” He didn’t know why he had gone. It only made things worse. It only ever made things worse.
“You came when I called,” Lucifer insisted, his voice breaking.
“You hadn’t called for me for a long time,” Famine said quietly. He shouldn’t have answered, should never have gone. But the siren song of the one who would forever hold his very soul was a melody he hadn’t heard in forever, and he had wanted to give in, even for just a moment. Once again, his inability to stay strong had ended up hurting everyone around him.
Lucifer lunged forward and wrapped his thick fingers around Famine’s throat, the long nails curling into the skin of his neck. “You tricked me.”
“No.” Never. Famine couldn’t have, even if he’d wanted to.
“You torment me, and you love it,” Lucifer whispered harshly. He pressed his nose to Famine’s cheek and took a deep breath.
“You know that isn’t true.” Famine hands reached forward without his permission, curling his fingers into the buckles of the wide leather belt wrapped around Lucifer’s waist, holding them together.
Lucifer moved his open mouth across Famine’s cheek, his fang cutting into Famine’s flesh until he reached the bottom of Famine’s ear. “Do it, Famine. Hurt me.”
“No.” Famine made sure to control his breathing so that Lucifer’s nails didn’t dig in any deeper. “I won’t play this game with you.’
“But we could have such fun playing games.” Lucifer’s forked tongue slid out and licked across Famine’s cheek, nose, lips.
Famine opened his mouth, wanting that tongue to slip inside so he could taste it. All he had to do was turn his head, and he could have it. He wanted to so badly that his insides ached with it.
If the consequences were only Famine’s to bear, he would have. He wanted to give Lucifer, his Samael, whatever he wanted. But their lives weren’t their own, and they were at the whims of a Being who had gone mad with power. The last time they had allowed their love to thrive, they had been punished. God had threatened to do so much worse if Famine didn’t toe the line. Famine couldn’t allow that. It wasn’t for his own sake, but for Lucifer’s, for his brothers’. He wouldn’t let anyone be hurt because of him, not again. He wouldn’t allow Lucifer to be punished any more, to fall any further.
“I came here for a reason,” Famine said, trying not to allow himself to be distracted.
“Of course you did.” Lucifer stepped away, and the Hellfire around them flared higher.
Famine eyed it, knowing if it hit him that he would burn up. He wasn’t immune to the harshest of Lucifer’s Powers.
Lucifer’s eyes had begun to turn red, and it meant his sanity was leaving him. It made Famine’s heart break all over again.
He hissed when a lick of Hellfire touched his calf and burnt through, leaving a stinging sore in its wake. One that would soon blister before healing. “Lucifer, pull it back.”
