For Dominick and Alfie, it feels like they’ve only just settled into life at Balcarres House when an urgent letter from an old friend has them racing back to London. However, they’re not returning to Alfie’s swirling ton of money and nobility, but to the dark underside of the city that Dominick knows all too well.
In a desperate race against time, they’ll have to walk streets that Alfie barely remembers and Dominick hoped to forget. Their return brings up terrors better left in the past and for one of them, the strain may be too much to bear.
Under the shadow of the workhouse, they’ll have to act quickly to stop a killer or the lives lost may be their own.
His Lordship’s Return is the third novel in the His Lordship’s Mysteries series.
REVIEW:
Note: This is the third book in this series that builds on the previous adventures of Alfie and Dominick. As such it these books should be read in order.
Alfie and Nick have headed back to London to try to get help for the husband of an old friend. But they are too late. And then of course they stumble onto as murder. They can’t leave well enough alone after the constabulary refuses to admit it was murder or investigate in any way. The clues point to a bar in Spitalfields and once again, Dominick is off the save the day.
Being back in the part of the city they grew up in is hard on Nick. And Alfie is furious that he’s run off without him. As he gets deeper into the mystery and the bodies pile up, you know Alfie is not content to sit on the sidelines. But then Nick feels like he has even more to do to catch a murderer and watch out for Alfie. But Alfie came from the same mud that Nick did and he’s determined to help 😉 Luckily they do have each other’s backs.
From my perspective, this series just keeps better and better. Each book has built on the previous book and the relationship between Alfie and Dominick. These two manage to involve themselves in yet another murder investigation. The danger is of course that they’ve found themselves back in their old stomping grounds of Spitalfields. Their ability to fit in with the old crowd enables them to get close enough to determine what is going on. They know it’s right under their noses, but they can’t catch a break.
The writing of this stellar. I love all the historical references and the prose is so descriptive you can almost smell the stink! I’m not sure how I could love this series more. I really cannot wait for more Alfie and Nick Well done!
