When one of the household turns up dead, matters only get worse.
While Alfie tries to solve this mystery, his lover Dominick struggles to fit into his new station in life. It feels like the mud from the slums still sticks to his fine new clothes. He starts to worry that he’ll never be able to stand by Alfie’s side, and about what will happen when Alfie realises the same.
But Balcarres House holds secrets that cry out for blood. If Alfie and Dominick aren’t careful, they may become the next ghosts trapped within its walls.
His Lordship’s Master is the second title in the His Lordship’s Mysteries series.
REVIEW:
I absolutely adore Nick and Alfie! This story is spooky and scary and I loved every single second of it!
Nick and Alfie arrive at Balcarres house after a leisurely trip from London after they have escaped death several times. Alfie is still recovering from his second gunshot wound to his leg. He’s got a new cane 😉 that he unfortunately has to actually use for it’s main purpose. When they arrive on a stormy night, well let’s just say it’s not very welcoming. They do meet the staff and settle in.
Dominick is learning to ride and Alfie is getting caught up on the estate accounts. But then after Alfie is sure he’s seen a ghost in the hall one night, they household awakes to discover the butler is missing. When they find him murdered, it’s clear that the local constabulary is not going to do much to find the murderer 🙁 So Alfie and Dominick decide they need to look into it.
Along the way Alfie seems to be getting chummy with the man handling the affairs of the estate. Dominick is jealous. Dominick is learning to ride with lessons from the newly promoted valet who would like more than just riding lessons from Nick 😉 This leads to some hard feelings and uncomfortable silence. Once things are back on track, they are no closer to finding the killer 🙁 But there is a odious dinner party to look forward to!
The dinner party goes awry and another person goes missing. Alfie may have found the key to the mystery. But there is potential peril for all if the murderer isn’t caught. Oh and there’s also a mystery around the ghost and the Wicked Master to solve too!
What a fabulous follow-up to the first of this series. I am so impressed with the writing in this series. The historical details, the lush descriptions, the solid mystery and of course the wonderful characters just make for a fabulous reading experience. The supporting characters here are hilariously written in some instances and represent various relatable parts of the social and class system. As the story moves on, Nick and Alfie are still solidly on the path to building a real relationship. They have each other’s backs while still being mindful of their positions. I honestly cannot wait to see what happens to them next! This is a really intriguing series and I cannot wait for the next book. Highly recommended.
