BLURB:
A prickly mage has me under his spell, and I think I kinda like it.
The first time I met him, I knew I was in trouble, but I hadn’t known just how much. I hadn’t been looking for a relationship, hadn’t wanted one, but it seems that a stubborn little mage did it for me because he’s impossible to resist.
When the NHSO goes on a manhunt for an unregistered mage, I can tell it’s upsetting for Mads and Jude. It’s upsetting for me, too, but even more so when I find out exactly why Mads is so worried about this kid. The more I find out about Madeo’s past and his world, the more I realize how special he is. No one who’s gone through what he has should come out the other side sane, let alone as kind-hearted as him. I just hope he wants this thing between us to continue as badly as I do. And I want it to. Bad.
REVIEW:
This is a short novella, told from Cosmo’s perspective. It is more lighthearted whilst still dealing with serious sensitive issues.
It was great to see how Cosmo viewed the happenings of The Scars That Bind Us (Book 1) and his thoughts about Madeo. You really get to see his caring nature and how much he wants his relationship with Madeo to succeed whilst struggling with his jealousy over the bond Madeo and Jude have, a bond he knows he needs to accept, he realizes his jealousy is unfounded and that he hopes he will one day be the person Madeo turns to for support instead of always turning to Jude. The bond Jude and Madeo share is a magical one, which goes deep and will be with them for the rest of their lives. It is also a bond that has sustained them through dark times and enables Madeo to perform his magic using Jude as his focus.
It was also interesting to find out more about the secret Cloaked Highway which smuggles un-registered Magi out of the country where they can live freely away from the oppression of the US. The fact that Madeo and Jude have helped un-registered Magi over the years and the risks they are taking in helping. The sheer panic and terror they felt when they realized someone had been following them and that they expected to be arrested and tortured imminently. Registered Magi have a tracker inserted behind their ribs, so they can always be tracked, so they are unable to escape to freedom as they would be caught before they got very far. It was very reminiscent of occupied countries during the World Wars and how people were smuggled out to safety.
It was nice to see Madeo’s softer caring side and how much he bonded with the unregistered magi they were helping, in such a short time. Their hopes and fears for a better future for the young person that he wouldn’t suffer like they had.
The overarching story of disappearing Shifters continued along with the mysterious witch signs being found and I am sure more about those developments will be made clearer in the next book in the series.
A very enjoyable short read that gives a bit more depth to the previous book and lets you know much more about Cosmo and his thoughts and feelings.
