The worst thing my sister ever did was agree to marry Devon Montgomery.
The best thing she ever did was cancel the wedding two weeks out from the big day.
It’s not that I don’t like Devon. It’s that I hate him. I detest him. I loathe him.
And, for some reason, the feeling is mutual, although why anyone would hate someone as amazing as me is completely beyond my understanding.
Devon, on the other hand? He’s an overbearing, uptight, pretentious snob who wouldn’t know a good time if it bit him on the arse.
I mean, yes, he’s insanely attractive. And, yes, he’s been known to star in some particularly dirty fantasies of mine—ones of the hate-sex variety.
But that’s all it is.
Well, that’s all it was supposed to be…
Until I discover Devon has been having the exact same fantasies about me. Turns out he’s not so averse to fun after all…
P.S. I Loathe You is a stand-alone enemies to more, sister’s ex, online ‘bromance’, opposites attract romantic comedy with two swoon-worthy leads, quirky side characters, a ton of sexytimes, and a guaranteed HEA.
REVIEW:
You can always count on Isla Olsen for some irreverent, funny, sexy M/M romances. The stories are quick, easy, light reads, albeit without much depth. Her latest, P.S. I Loathe You, follows in that same vein, this time with a standalone, opposites attract, enemies to lovers romance between Devon and his ex-fiancee’s brother, Wes. Olsen falls back on one of her typical plot elements – the anonymous online/emails/texts chatting – which provides plenty of banter and sexual tension. She also employs her usual character obliviousness to string out the UST.
Generally, I enjoy Olsen’s stories, but something about P.S. I Loathe You didn’t work for me. Perhaps it’s ennui about Olsen’s familiar tropiness and plot devices. Or it could be that I just didn’t connect with these characters. Their animosity read as childish, pseudo-pigtail-pulling behavior that grated on me. Another minor (to the plot) but important (to social messaging, PSA) is Olsen’s cavalier portrayal of safe sex. I’ve seen this in some of her other stories as well. Misrepresentation of safe sex practices or lackadaisical attitude about it is simply not acceptable.
Overall, P.S. I Loathe You is just ok. If you like Olsen’s writing and don’t mind the same content trotted out over and over from book to book, albeit in slightly different forms, you’ll likely enjoy this. Unfortunately, I did not. Maybe it’s a “me” thing. I wanted something fresh and got superficial and hackneyed. But, on the other hand, the story is short enough that you can always judge for yourself and not lose much for the effort. And your view may very well disagree with mine, so I wouldn’t dissuade you if you wanted to give it a try.
