BLURB:
Dr. Jackson Burnside is an orthopedic surgeon who made his own way. Always different, he got out of Natchez before his family could throw him out, but still wishes things could be reconciled. He’s built a successful practice and a sound reputation in Carlisle. When he’s called to the hospital for a consultation, the last person he expects to meet is Wes.
Wes Fortier had fewer opportunities than Jackson, but he’s worked hard and has a good job that brought him to Carlisle. A work injury lands him in the ER, where he crosses paths again with Jackson, who may be the silver lining he has been praying for in a life filled with gray.
Jackson’s and Wes’s renewed friendship deepens to attraction and possibly unspoken love. Both Wes and Jackson find something they’ve been missing. Just when they begin to lay the foundations of the kind of relationship they’ve both wished for, Jackson’s mother swoops into town with an olive branch for her son, but her hidden agenda could threaten everything.
REVIEW:
These poor doctors in Carlisle sure have to deal with a lot of homophobic parents! So do their boyfriends 😉
In this one, Jackson Burnside, an ortho, has long left his family and life in Natchez, Mississippi behind. He’s worked his butt off to get through college and medical school. He has settled and set up his orthopedic practice in Carlisle and he’s got a good group of friends. His life pretty much revolves around his work, his dog Poppy and his house and friends. He gets called in for an emergency and it’s his old best friend Wes from Natchez. They haven’t seen each other since he left to go to college and they lost touch years before. Wes has moved to Carlisle for a job as well. But he’s been in an accident and his arm is broken and so is his leg. His leg will have to operated on. He’s not happy about it, but Jackson explains it’s necessary.
The surgery goes well and Wes is recovering, but he’s in a second floor walkup and he doesn’t have many friends yet in town and he can’t possibly go home to his place. They are having trouble getting him a place for rehab, so Jackson decides he’ll stay at his house with day time nursing care for the time being 🙂 They get closer and Wes is healing. They are negotiating their new relationship. Wes isn’t sure what Jackson really wants. Jackson has a lot of ethical issues since he’s Wes’s doctor.
Everything goes sideways when Jackson’s mother shows up out of the blue. They literally have had no contact in over a decade. She comes up supposedly for the reason of Jackson’s father needing Jackson’s help. Hmmmm. Really? Anyway, Jackson isn’t having it and Wes holds his own as well 😀 Despite her attempts, Jackson is not budging and it’s clear there are other reasons for this renewed contact. All becomes clear soon and Jackson and Wes are solid in their response.
This is another rather sweet romance of second chances. These guys go from old friends, to renewed friends to eventually lovers. It’s a bit shorter than the others as these two already have a shared past that they each know well. Both have nonaccepting families and they are there for each other. The secondary characters all encourage them to go for it – you only live once. Also life is short! Nothing earthshaking here, but if you are in the mood for a quick, sweet romance of guys grabbing a second chance, this is one you may enjoy.
