REVIEW:
You’ve heard me say it before – Jocelynn Drake’s excellent The Godstone Saga series contains a continuing storyline that progresses and builds from book to book. These books cannot be read as standalones. Embrace the Light is the fifth book in this six-book story arc, so if you are reading this review and haven’t read the previous books, start with Kale Williams’ invested vocal performance in book one, Steal the Wind, and continue in order with the audiobooks from there. Williams’ work on the audiobook for Embrace the Light is as enjoyable and impactful as the previous series installments. However, we’re nearing the end now, and you can hear it in Drake’s words and in Williams’ voice.
With Embrace the Light, we get another journey for Caelan, Drayce, Raine, Eno, and their new-joiner comrade in arms, Adrian, who joined them in the last book as a second bodyguard and protector of Caelan. With another journey comes another god – this time the God of Wisdom, Lore. Much of this story is a redo of the general content and theme from book four. The intrigue, suspicion, not knowing who to trust, learning more and more about each other and also about what the gods have in store for them and for Thia. In each book, Caelan’s internal battle increases. He’s now bonded to four gods, and it’s taking its toll on him. But at the end of this book, we get the big reveal, setting us up for what will be a riveting finale.
Williams continues with his superb narration on the Embrace the Light audiobook. He knows these characters like the back of his hand at this point. You can tell in his connection to their feelings and emotions and in how he translates that through his intonations, dynamics, pacing, and vocal choices of timbre and pitch for each of the characters.
I highly recommend this intriguing fantasy series and the fascinating characters at its heart. Embrace the Light is an enjoyable read that will have you eagerly poised for the finale in book six.
