Hello, there! I’m Octavius Evander. And this is the beginning of my story—well…sort of. It’s not the very beginning. As a vampire, that story would be way too long to write down—think, before the Romans. Rather, this story is about how I met the love of my unlife. Okay, it will be mostly about the cool and fancy detective agency I opened and solving mysteries, but also a little about love too.
So, what does one need to open a detective agency, you may ask? Well, for one, a detective. As it was my idea, and I paid for everything, I, of course, filled that role. Next, I needed a secretary. My beautiful and marginally dangerous best friend Scarlett filled that role. Now, I will admit, at that time, I had not thought further than that, and simply skipped to getting my detective license, an office, and some other necessities.
My mind might have been too full of the fun adventures I was about to have. My hope was that those in and out of the paranormal communities would keep me entertained for a very long time. I quickly realized I still needed a driver, a tech person, and a witch that was good with ghosts. This is the story of how I found those people. And who would have thought the first to walk through the door would be human, with no knowledge of the paranormal—my precious Turney.
CONTENT WARNING: This is a slow burn M/M paranormal romance book. There will be blood, violence and death. Please do not read if you find any of the previous triggering.
REVIEW:
Cute. That would pretty much sum up my impression of this first book in a new series by Shelby Rhodes. The entire premise of the Undead Detective Agency is a lighthearted romp that, while gory in places, and containing some limited m/m sex, seemed to me more a Harry Potter sort of book. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Harry Potter books before certain things were revealed about the author, so I’m not saying I don’t like that sort of book. In fact, I quite enjoyed this one, finishing it in one unseasonably cold, damp and dreary for Vermont in July, afternoon.
Now let’s talk about the story. When Turney’s roommate shows Turney a flyer for a job opening, on black paper with white printing, for a place called the Undead Detective Agency, the roommate doesn’t realize how much Turney needs a job. We quickly learn that he earned all the money he has been using towards his Ivy League education by participating in street racing, a highly illegal past time. He has hidden that fact by claiming the money came from a family inheritance.
Turney’s world is knocked askew when he goes on the job interview and meets his prospective employer, Octavius Evander. Turney learns that vampires, ghouls, ghosts and other supernatural creatures are all, in fact, real. They’re hidden from the human population, but they are there, nonetheless. Turney is quickly offered a job as the driver for Octavius, who he learns is a vampire and they are soon off on their first investigation.
I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and humor of the story. I found it quite funny how many things happened to poor Turney on his first day on the job. I will be looking for more tales in this series and I highly recommend if you are into a light-hearted and humorous read with very little m/m sex, that you pick up this book and give this author a try. The author was a new to me author, but I took the chance on them, and so should you.

The blurb and your review make this sound irresistible to me. I can’t wait to get started!
I really love this book and also recommend it. A quirky vampire, humor, creepy cases to solve, and romance (with a promise to a lot more)…all perfectly balanced out
