Theresa can’t bear who she’s become. Can Ash show her hope’s sunrise?
Ash’s dads have embraced their nonbinary self and Ash feels empowered in their blindness, but their dads still won’t let them do anything alone. When Ash meets Theresa at a blindness conference, they long to slip the apron strings.
Theresa, blinded in a terrible incident, has fully embraced her transgender identity. What she can’t get past is her loss of sight. Meeting Ash, who is confident in their disability, seems like a gift, especially the first time they kiss.
But Theresa hides a terrible secret and she’s afraid between that and her disability she won’t be good enough for Ash. How can Ash possibly prove her wrong?

This room had been set up with round tables, about half a dozen, they’d been told when entering. Aidan had found a table near the front of the room and Ash had dutifully followed, Quincy, their guide dog, leading them flawlessly. This was Quincy’s second convention and he seemed to be doing remarkably well. Aidan had been right about this, at least. Exposing Quincy to a smaller, state, convention before this larger, national one, had been a good idea. What a difference one smaller state meeting of the NFB could make! Even when another guide dog had passed them in the hallway and woofed softly, Quincy hadn’t returned the greeting.
Thinking of Quincy made Ash’s smile grow and they settled back in their chair to wait for the meeting to start. They and Aidan had arrived a little early so that they could get good seats. This way, Aidan could walk up and introduce himself when called upon. As the ADA Coordinator for all the county where their home of Marisburg was situated and being president of their local chapter of the NFB, he had a powerful voice inside this organization.
That’s fine, Ash thought, but does he have to exert his power over me too?
Then they were thoroughly and effectively distracted by a soft tenor voice and a heavenly scent of lavender. “May we sit here?” the tenor asked.
Ash answered without checking to see if there were seats at the table. “Absolutely.” Please, they thought, sit next to me.
Reaching down, they checked to make sure Quincy was well out of the way of moving chair legs. He wagged in response to their hand on him but otherwise didn’t move. “Good dog,” Ash murmured.
The lavender-scented person with the tenor voice mumbled, “Excuse me” as he bumped Ash a little before managing to sit down.
“You’re fine,” Ash answered.
“Hi,” said someone who’d probably been with the tenor voice. She sounded bubbly. “I’m Charity and this is Theresa.”
The “he” was a “she.” Trans? Ash wondered, feeling a little thrill of anticipation. It was wonderful to meet a member of the LGBTQ+ community who wasn’t already known to them.
“I’m Aidan Delaney,” Aidan introduced himself. Then he nudged Ash.
Ash felt themself blush. They did not need Aidan’s unsubtle hint to be polite. “I’m Ash,” they said, turning their head toward the tenor voiced, lavender-scented person beside them.
There was a rustle of cloth from close by and Ash wondered if Theresa was wearing a skirt. Ash wore dress pants and a blouse that was not gender specific. It had taken a long time to find clothing that wasn’t masculine or feminine and yet fit just fine. But they suddenly felt sexy and wished the tenor beside them could see. Maybe she could. Not everyone here was blind. Ash asked, “Are you new to the convention?”
“Very,” Charity answered.
“Did you go to the LGBTQ+ meeting last night?” Ash asked, greatly daring. After all, maybe Theresa wasn’t trans.
“There was a…” the tenor voiced person began but Charity overrode her.
“We didn’t know about it. Will there be more?”
“Friday night,” Aidan said. “Ash and I attend. Ash is nonbinary and I’m gay.”
“How do you know each other?” Charity asked.
Ash opened their mouth, but Aidan beat them to it. “They’re my child. Do either of you want coffee?”
