Welcome to The Perdition Club, where the wine is sweet but the revenge is sweeter.
Danny Taggart, the son of a Scottish baronet, has traveled from the distant windswept shores of the Orkney Islands to seek revenge on the man who ruined his sister a decade ago. Posing as a dissolute rake, he infiltrates the ranks of the nobility to get close to his mark, the Earl of Meadshead. Danny plays his part well, but as he’s nearing his quarry, a pair of blue eyes and a head of blonde curls atop a mountain of a man distracts him.
Cecil Tarr spends his nights pouring drunk nobs into their carriages, breaking up fights, and removing cheats from the premises at the Perdition Club. He hardly spares a thought for the young rakes who spend their time drinking and gambling away their fortunes—until one catches his eye. The Scot is handsome as sin, but Danny represents everything Cecil reviles about the upper crust of society. Maybe he’d feel differently if he wasn’t the bastard son of the repugnant Earl of Meadshead.
When Danny discovers Cecil holds a grudge against Meadshead even larger than his own, the two men join forces to keep the Earl from ruining any more lives. If they fail, the Earl’s next victim will be shackled to him forever as his bride. As the attraction between them boils over, will they be able to keep the Earl in their sights, or will they be blinded by their passion? Can love really conquer all?
REVIEW:
Cecil Tarr is the footman at The Perdition Club. He’s keeps things running smoothly and removes those who would do differently 😉 When he spots Danny Taggart (aka Sir Danny McNabb), he thinks he’s another of the ne’er do well aristocracy who is there to lose the money he never earned and to run roughshod over the help. He acts the drunk and condescending fool, but then he discovers something different. And damn it, he’s far too intrigued by this discovery as he’s wildly attracted to the Scotsman.
Danny Taggart is on a mission to avenge the wrong done to his sister a decade earlier and the theft of his family’s prime stock. He will stop at nothing to take down the Earl of Meadshead who deceived his sister and destroyed his family’s livelihood. Now he’s no longer a teenager and he will have his revenge. He finds himself in over his head with Cecil, the footman at Perdition and tells him at least part of the truth and invites him to dinner.
When he shares the reason for his trip to London, Cecil is gobsmacked. He’s overwhelmed and runs away. But thankfully his best friend Sparrow gives him a talking to and he relents and hears Danny out. It seems that they have a common enemy and both would be extremely satisfied to take down the man who has had such a negative impact on their lives. Cecil is doing it not only for himself, but for his mother and any other progeny that the Earl has mistreated. Danny will have justice for his family if it’s the last thing he does.
But when they attempt to find the evidence to take the Earl down, Danny has to continue playing the fool while Cecil is endangered. Fear not! Help comes from other quarters and all is not lost 🙂
I am really enjoying this series! It’s a multi-author one set in the same universe. Each book focuses on a different couple and this one is a doozy! Cecil and Danny aren’t as far apart as Cecil thinks they are in rank. In fact in the end, it’s the exact opposite 🙂 I loved how they learned to work together and the plan to catch the Earl was delightful! There are plenty of smexy times and I loved the period touches. This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it was really good. The writing style, the characterizations, the action and intrigue were all engaging and fun! The angst was low and the steam high and the HEA so worth it. Recommended and on to the next tale of the very busy gaming hell!
