REVIEW:
Caesar Potts is one of the co-owners of The Perdition Club, a very successful gaming hell in London. He and his friends Jasper and Simon have made a good investment in the club and run it quite well. The money they make funds Caesar’s other endeavors. But a certain man of the cloth has focused his ire on the club and has taken to preaching on the doorstep and scaring away patrons. Finally Caesar has had enough and invites George Mulgrew into the club itself. It’s clear that George is intrigued by what he sees but he’s spent his life being railed at by his father about the wages of sin, etc. etc. When it appears that George is determined to take Caesar and his friends down, well Caesar has to do something. He knows that George is curious and that it’s pretty obvious there is an attraction there, so he takes matters into his own hands.
George is definitely intrigued and attracted to the mysterious Caesar. As he is awaiting Caesar’s return after he’s been called away, he snoops and discovers that Caesar isn’t at all what he thought. His attraction grows! And when he accompanies Caesar on his “rounds” well he just falls for Caesar all the harder. He finally understands what it is to truly care for his fellow man. He’s absolutely gobsmacked but what he witnesses and the scales fall from his eyes as to the poor lessons he’s learned from his hard-hearted father. He’s finally found the thing he knows he’s truly called to do.
But when George’s nasty father shows up at The Perdition Club and George leaves with him, Caesar is heartsick. Will he return? What will the elder Reverend Mulgrew do? He’s threatened the hall with the Runners, but will he follow through? Will George return to him? You’ll have to read to find out 😉
Well this was a very interesting story to read. Caesar is a bit of an enigma. But we soon learn that he uses his position and wealth from The Perdition Club for many good works. George is greatly surprised to learn that Caesar has done far more for the poor and luckless of London than his fire and brimstone father has ever done for anybody. His haranguing of “sinners” has had no effect to be honest and Caesar has helped countless people live a better life and lifted more people out of poverty and bad situations that George can ever even imagine. It doesn’t hurt that Caesar also is a thoughtful and passionate lover and provides George with the first really love and affection he’s ever known. George’s discovery that all he’s been taught is wrong is quite the epiphany for him. Caesar’s background and true calling were a fun surprise. I am really liking this series and all the interesting characters. I cannot wait to read more. Recommended.
