Eric hurried back over to the hole leading into the ventilation shaft. He climbed onto the bench and jumped. He caught the edge of the gap with his hands and pulled himself back up.
“Get onto the bench and I’ll pull you in,” he told them as he leaned back down as far as he could. “Adam, you’re first.”
“No,” Adam shook his head. “My staff.”
“You need to lead the way,” Eric reminded him.
“Okay,” Adam agreed as he climbed up and reached out to grab Eric’s hands. Eric quickly pulled him up into the space beside him.
“Go,” Eric said as he leaned down to help Allaway next. “We’ll be right behind you.”
Adam nodded as he began crawl down the shaft. Allaway’s pace was a lot slower, and Eric wondered if he would make it out. Shaking this off, he leaned down and helped the others one by one. He had just pulled Rory up when the cell door burst open. Eric heard shouting as he turned and began to crawl after them.
“Dad,” he spoke loudly into the radio. “It was a trap. We are fine, but they have sounded the alarm. We’re just making our way back to you.”
“Eric, you need to hurry,” Matheson’s voice came through urgently. “Perses’ scanner is picking up movement on the ground. I’m certain its reinforcements.”
“Great,” Eric sighed. “We’re going as fast as we can.”
“Hurry,” Matheson reiterated.
Eric did not reply as he focused on their surroundings. They had cleared the first section and were halfway through the second when the shooting started. Whilst some of the bullets were absorbed by the metal, it was not built to withstand the onslaught for long.
“Keep moving!” Eric shouted as the first shot got through. Spurred on by the success, the guards continued firing. In the commotion Eric lost track of what was going on. More bullets were penetrating the metal now, and Eric heard one man in front of him cry out in pain. Then over the gunfire there was a loud pop and a hissing sound. Glancing behind him he shone his torch at the cylinder and saw in horror the neat bullet hole in the side of it.
“Adam, they’ve hit the cylinder! We need to get out of this section now!”
Adam did not respond as they pushed further forward again. Eric could see the light from his torch ahead of them. The beam jerked from side to side as Adam crawled as fast as he could. They were nearly there, Eric kept saying to himself over and over. He saw Adam reach the next section. Eric could not see what had happened to cause it but as Adam crossed the ventilation grate, he stumbled. A shout went up from the guards at the same moment that Allaway surged forwards. He slammed into Adam as gunfire exploded all around them. Eric heard a thud and then nothing. It was now too far away for him to see what had happened.
“Adam!” he called out urgently.
“I’m fine,” came his faint response.
“Eric,” Rory murmured. “I don’t feel that great…”
The sevoflurane…even the smallest amount would affect them before they could get out of here.
“Go,” he said, gently pushing Rory forwards. “Get to Perses and tell Simon to take off.”
“What about you?”
“We need more time,” Eric answered grimly as he turned back the way that they had come.
“Eric?” Adam’s voice sounded over the radio as Eric crawled towards the nearest grate.
“Adam, we’ll never make it otherwise.”
“I know.”
Eric wanted to say more, and he knew that Adam did too, but uttering those words felt almost fatal as he recalled the events that had parted them the first time.
“I’ll see you at Carnelian,” Eric mustered finally as he reached the grate.
“You’d better,” was Adam’s reply as Eric prized it off with his hands.
Eric drew his gun as he prepared to swing himself down through the hole. His advanced abilities and training gave him the edge and better chance of surviving this, but despite this Eric was wondering if his promise to meet Adam at Carnelian was one that he would be able to keep.
