Don’t mess with the dragon shifter sheriff’s mate. He bites.
Mercury is content with life. He loves being sheriff. He loves his clan. And he loves his sleepy, small town. When Wingspan turns into a refuge for a group of trafficked vampires, Mercury has mixed feelings about whether they should become permanent residents, and he’s not the only
one. Several folks want the vampires out of their town, but some want to do it by any means necessary, even if that means resorting to violence.
And then one day he gets called out to break up a fight between a vampire and two dragon shifters. Discovering the vampire is his fated mate, he has to make a choice: Fight for Wingspan or fight for his mate.
REVIEW:
I’ve been so looking forward to returning to Wingspan, it’s a series I really love, whilst the books aren’t too long, they are action packed and so much fun to read and Book 5 Mercury on Fire didn’t disappoint.
We first met Mercury the grumpy sheriff in On Solid Ground Wingspan Book 3 when Teagan put Leaf into his jail. Mercury was gruff and taciturn but as we saw what happened with Leaf, we knew that Mercury has a caring heart under his gruff exterior. Mercury loves Wingspan and his job as a sheriff, he knows everyone, and everyone knows him. Life as a small-town sheriff can be predictable and not a lot happens, the occasional fight, lost puppy, or a stolen car. Mercury can feel the tension rising within the clan, since the vampires were rescued and given a haven at the community centre.
Eldon has never had an easy life, abandoned as a baby, all he has ever known is ill-treatment and having to fight for every scrap he has. Just once he gave into his longing to belong and ended up in the Vampire Clan to once again be used and discarded, ending up in the panel room with the other victims. He barely leaves his room until he becomes friends with Morgan, Leaf and Asher. Eldon might be slight, but he is no pushover, he has fought his whole life and has no problem going up against bigoted Dragon Shifters.
There are hints throughout this book about Eldon being slightly different to other vampires, he doesn’t know who his parents were. I’m wondering if he is a hybrid or something else, perhaps it will become apparent later in the series.
When Mercury and Eldon meet and realize they are mates, Mercury’s reaction surprised me and made me sad. I later realized, what Mercury had realized straight away, the consequences of their mating and how that would play out with the Clan. To top it all off, there is a murder. With the bigots screaming it was a vampire, the clock is ticking to find the murderer before it’s too late. The tension and action keep building with twists and turns along the way before the truth is revealed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book Mercury and Eldon’s love story was beautifully crafted with the other mystery elements woven through.
