It’s recommended but not essential to have read what’s come before.
Nigel wouldn’t mind if Asher called him Daddy if the age gap didn’t bother him.
Nigel Blackburn has lived a full life as a private investigator. His job means he travels solo, which is something he enjoys. He’s a grouchy, stubborn dragon shifter who is better off alone. The last thing he wants is a mate and certainly not one so young. It doesn’t matter that he finds little bobcat shifter Asher Burkhart sexy. But all Nigel’s dragon wants to do is protect, which is good because danger drives into town.
A Little Unsteady (Wingspan #4) is a continuation of Solid Ground (Wingspan #3). For the best reading experience, read them in order.
REVIEW:
I was so happy to return to Wingspan and find out about Asher’s story. I knew that Asher was happy go lucky who easily made friends and his difficult start in life in the orphanage hadn’t affected him as much as his brother Leaf. I got hints from the previous book about what happened, but no real detail, this book fills in the gaps. Asher for all his friendly personality is a survivor, he has in the past relied on his brother to save him, but he will fight, he’s no pushover. He then found himself in a place where he only had himself to rely on and he rose to the challenge, he didn’t give his captors an inch and fought every way he could.
The scenes in the lab were creepy not for any in depth descriptions but the very dead eyed Doctor who was so wrapped up in his experiments he didn’t see his subjects as anything apart from an experiment. That to me upped the creepy factor by 1000 to be so oblivious to the very real people was horrible.
The writing once Asher was freed and had met his mate was sublime the struggle with anxiety and feeling unsafe, the turmoil in his mind and not knowing how he should feel or indeed what he was feeling was so well written and my heart went out to Asher to have your whole life and being changed so drastically and then having to process it all, it’s so much to deal with.
Nigel was so much fun, a typical grumpy old man, who protests so much about the age gap but really didn’t put up any sort of fight or indeed didn’t hesitate to be Asher’s safe place. He was all bluster and grumpiness but, he is very nurturing and protective, exactly what Asher needed.
You’d think that their dynamic would be older dragon Nigel being dominant and young bobcat Asher being submissive but to my delight Asher gives as good as he gets and isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. Theirs is a quirky dynamic that is refreshing and enjoyable to read.
I did like that the overarching storyline about the experimentation was still bubbling away in the background and I’m looking forward to seeing where that goes as you can feel an arch villain in the background pulling the strings but who it is and what they are after is still very much a mystery.
I recommend this book and series they are fun to read and have an interesting overarching storyline that connects the books together. It’s also great that the other characters from previous books pop up again.
