Solving the case will be tricky. But keeping their hands off each other will be impossible.
Detective Rick Canali’s life is perfect the way it is. He loves his job with the Chico, CA police. He can get casual sex whenever he wants it, and for family vibes, he has his brother Angelo’s large family of hotheaded firefighters. He’s happy being a “perpetual bachelor.” But when he’s partnered up with a too-attractive newbie detective, all the neat boxes in his life threaten to collapse. Because the one thing this detective never saw coming—falling in love.
John Rivera always wanted to be a detective. He’s determined to succeed despite his ex trying to make his life hell and his new partner—the gorgeous Rick Canali—making it clear he’s not wanted. As a former foster care kid, he’s used to fighting his own battles and depending on no one.
When a firefighter dies under suspicious circumstances, Rick and John’s new partnership is tested. It turns out, they’re a pretty good team. But can they crack the case while dancing around their mutual attraction, dodging John’s ex, and trying to keep the Canali firefighters safe from a potential killer in the Cal Fire ranks?
HOT PURSUIT is a murder mystery wrapped in a romance with a big scoop of suspense, hurt-comfort, evil ex, and more Canali family feels.
REVIEW:
I have really loved this series with the hot, studdly, young Canali firefighters but Uncle Ricky really is the rich, decedent filling in one of Lucille’s cannolis!
Ricky is Angelo’s much younger brother and Donny and Mike’s uncle. We learned, late in book 2, that Rick is gay and came out to Donny and Angie while out to eat to support his nephew in front of his brother. He is a Homicide Detective with the Chico police department. He has always kept his personal life close to the cuff at work and at home. That all comes crashing to the ground when his partner Roy retired and he is partnered up with the very attractive and openly gay newest detective to the force, John Rivera. John, who has been with Vice for the last six years, is the newly promoted deceive and assigned to the Cary Grant look-alike Rick Canali who ticks off all his buttons except the man is beyond stoic and doesn’t seem to want to be in the same room as him let alone work together on a case. Too bad Donny drops a hell of a case right in their laps!
I really wanted to know more about the mysterious Uncle Ricky especially when he came out to support Donny. I knew he was a Canali and that meant he was of special stock. Those men love fiercely and protect with every fiber of their body. And Rick was no different. I enjoyed that, while this was closely tied to the fire department and Donny and Mike, it focused on the police work that both Rick and John worked so hard at. I loved that Rick figured out what was up with his younger partner and tried to keep his feelings close to the vest while helping protect him from this awful ex. But the fire between these two burned so hot and Rick saw that coming out for John was the right thing to do. John was totally worth giving up his lockjaw personality for the man that made life make sense.
This book, although investigating the firefighter’s death, focused on police work instead of firefighting like the rest in the series. And it was awesome. Ms. Easton kept me on my toes and constantly guessing who did it. John’s enthusiasm and Rick’s guidance was a great play off each other that kept me rivières to the book. Now I can’t wait for the next in the series! I do recommend that you read these stories in order so you understand the Canali men, who they are and who completes their lives.
