Gear up for an all-the-feels, steamy slow-burn in this enemies-to-lovers sports romance about fighting for love when life’s taught you it’s a losing game.
Gavin
We’ve been teammates for two years, but it feels like a lifetime that Oliver Bergman’s been on my last nerve. A demanding captain and veteran player, I’m feared and friendless, while he’s the beloved rising star, all sunshine, smiles, and upbeat team spirit. To make matters worse, he’s obscenely attractive. In short: he’s genetically designed to get under my skin.
Avoiding Oliver has been my survival tactic on and off the field. But when Coach drops the bomb that we’re now co-captains, avoiding him becomes impossible, and keeping the truth from him—let alone my distance—is harder than ever.
Oliver
Life was great until soccer legend Gavin Hayes joined the team and proved he’s nothing like the guy I grew up idolizing. Instead, he’s a giant—albeit gorgeous—grump who lives to rain on my parade. I’ve sworn off pranks since entering the public eye, so rather than settle our differences the Bergman way, I’ve had to settle for killing Gavin with kindness. There’s just one problem: killing him with kindness is killing me.
To make matters worse, Coach gives us an ultimatum: put an end to our enmity or say goodbye to being captains. I’m prepared to be miserable while we meet her demands and make nice, but the last thing I expect is to discover an explosive attraction we can’t help but act on, and worse yet, to realize the man hiding beneath Gavin’s gruff exterior is all I’ve ever wanted.
REVIEW:
Oliver Bergman is a professional soccer player from a large and loving family. He’s a bit jealous of his brothers who are all attached – as well as their parents. He also has a crush on his teammate Gavin Hayes for years – like since he was a teenager. Oliver is out an proud bisexual and Gavin is an out gay athlete. He’s spent the majority of his career in England but now on the downside of this time as a professional athlete, his body is breaking down and he suffers from a lot of jealousy watching Oliver on this ascendency. It doesn’t help that Oliver’s outgoing sunny personality is the polar opposite of his gruff and abrasive style.
For two year Oliver and Gavin have been teammates, but not friends. Then the coach makes them co-captains. Things go from a bit of a frigid detente to a hostile war. They end up pushing each other and fighting in front of the team and the coach puts them on notice. Gavin is sick of Oliver’s happy go lucky personality – which he believes Oliver is using as a cover. He doesn’t realize how close to the bone he hits with that. Oliver’s been burned in the past by a teammate (who plays for a rival team) and he’s reluctant to ever put himself out there again and he covers up his lonliness with his happy sunshiny demeanor. When Gavin calls him on it, it is a bit of a wakeup call.
Oliver is tired of Gavin treating him like a kid. Gavin tries to justify his distance as wanting Oliver to not just be good, but encourage him to be great and to do that he’s going to have to be more selfish. Oliver struggles with this because he’s always been the one everyone likes. He’s happy being friendly with everyone he works with. Gavin keeps literally everyone at a distance except for a group of old men – friends of his neighbor that he plays poker with. Oh, and did I mention that Oliver lives right next door to Gavin? You can see where this is going right 😉
The neighborhood grandpa posse is quite interested in getting Gavin together with Oliver. The sexual tension has been building and building and when it finally spills over – it’s fireworks. But they agree that they are coworkers and it can only be for a weekend. But then a surprise arrival throws things off and they end up being back to work colleagues.
Turns out they can’t really stay away from each other, but Gavin is keeping a lot of secrets too. He’s also got a lot of baggage. It takes quite a while for him to deal with his past. When he has a serious injury and Oliver steps up to the plate to help him, he realizes that he really does have feelings for Oliver. He does the right thing and gets himself in a position to offer Oliver more than a bitter broken down former athlete.
Well I absolutely loved this one. This is part of a series of M/F romances about the lovely Bergman family. I haven’t read any of those and I don’t feel like I missed anything, but I am intrigued by the rest of the family 🙂 Oliver and Gavin has a lot of unresolved sexual tension that sizzles throughout this audio. Tim Paige does a FANTASTIC job with all the voices – from old men to three year old girls, to young women to crazy brothers. This is definitely one of my favorite audiobooks ever. I loved how Oliver and Gavin really grew into their relationship – with a LOT of help – from their coach from their friends and from Oliver’s family (who were all awesome by the way). This is one of the best pro athlete romances I’ve listened to and I can tell it’s going to be on my list for frequent relistens – it’s that good. Highly recommended.
