REVIEW:
Yet again the author manages to take the story and turn it on its head. Sometimes with a series as long as this, the story becomes stretched and thin with the overall arc becoming lost. That is certainly not the case here. The author always keeps their eye on where the story is going and it steams on straight ahead.
Perhaps one of the reasons the story keeps fresh and interesting is that it has been somewhat split into two, with John pursuing the main arc while Caleb and Gray have complete arcs of their own. In this case, there is an element of separation, but they all come together in the end with an explosive conclusion which feels complete while still leaving the door well and truly open for further books along the line.
I have made no secret of the fact that I am an avid follower this author and have yet to dislike anything they have written, although I have fallen in love with some more than others. They have never disappointed and that is certainly true of this book. The writing, as always is fluid and technically almost perfect. The characterisation is rich and varied, with side characters being as interesting and three dimensional as the main gang, which continues to grow and develop.
One particular thing that I found impressive was that, even after all this time the characters, main and side, continue to grow in such a way that there is movement both forward and backward and old issues still raise their heads while no longer dominating the story.
All in all this is a compelling, well written, dynamic and thrilling book which carries on the series while being complete in and of itself. I highly recommend to anyone who likes edge-of-the-seat books. I would also recommend that you go back and read at least Series 3, but if possible the whole three series as there is so much history in this book that you might get lost if you don’t have some background knowledge.
