Roman Mourier has been wandering aimlessly for decades, waiting for the inevitable day when the last of his humanity leaves him, and the demon inside him takes permanent control. He doesn’t believe in fated mates, or the myth that there’s a soul out there that could tether his humanity to him. Until he feels a strange pull to the lovely young man at the hospital, and hope stirs in him for the first time.
But Roman has demons other than just the one inside him. Is he strong enough to keep Danny safe from the past that haunts him? He knows one thing for sure: now that he’s found his mate, he will do anything to keep him.
REVIEW:
What a fabulous debut novel! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!!!
Danny Kingman has taken the weight of the world on his shoulders. He is an ER nurse who takes his job very seriously. But he is breaking under the pressure to pay for the needed care for his ailing mother. He takes any and all shifts possible to try and keep up with his mom’s bills and nursing school debt. He literally is working himself to death. When one late night he is working a shift an incredibly handsome but creepy man stops by his work station which is odd in itself. When the man shows up a second night he’s a bit creeped out more. But when that man saves him from a mugging he is confused but wants to get to know him more. Even though it’s pretty darn obvious he is something other than human. But Danny knows, deep inside, that Roman is not only not a threat to him but is highly protective of him. Something he hasn’t had in a really, really long time. From the moment that Roman, and his internal demon, smell Danny’s milk-and-honey scent they know he’s the one. The one that Roman has always thought was a myth, his mate! But he is reluctant to share this knowledge. He knows the myths believe that your true mate can “calm each other, prevent the descent into a feral state” but is it really true? Can an overworked ER nurse and a vampire that is more than two hundred years old make it work with evil lurking from Roman’s past?
I can say that this book captivated me. I was a bit unsure at the beginning because I’m not a big fan of historical romances but that was mostly just the prologue. We do get glimpses of Roman’s past with Luc but they are more about insight as to why Luc was like he is. But it’s Danny’s cheerful optimism and dedication to help all people that captured my heart. His humanity is a shining beacon that restores Roman and gives him hope. And they are the perfect mates. They compliment each other. I did love Soren, Roman’s best friend with the super model looks and quirky personality. He seemed to fit right in and believed that Roman really did find his fated mate.
I am looking forward to the next book where Soren and Gabe, Danny’s older brother, work things out.. “The stubborn brother and the bratty vamp” should be a real treat! And I really hope that we eventually get Luc’s HEA too. I know that he was revengeful however I think Danny saw something real in him…hope.
This book was a very pleasant surprise. It is well written and much more polished than most first novels are. I look forward to more from this talented and gifted first time author.
