The Sceptic by Lily Morton
Arcana Books, Book 1
As the best friend of a psychic, Will Buchanan can’t help but believe in the dead. It’s the living that he finds to be problematic. However, after a spate of betrayals, he finally has the chance of a new life within his grasp, and he’s not going to risk it for anyone or anything. Staying safe is the name of Will’s game.
Jem Dawson defines the word temporary. A talented cameraman, he’s here today and will undoubtedly be gone tomorrow chasing adventure and danger. But, while he’s in York, he’s made it clear he wants Will, and Will can’t help liking the charming daredevil.
This inconvenient attraction results in Will accompanying Jem to the site of a notorious poltergeist outbreak. A malevolent spirit has targeted a family, and now the ghost hunting team for whom Jem does camerawork are going to be locked down in the house for three days.
The house is strange and filled with sinister and violent undercurrents. One by one, the group experiences threatening incidents, and as events escalate, Will has to ask himself if he’s risking not just his heart but also his life with this impulsive gesture.
This is the first book in the Arcana Books series featuring characters from the bestselling Black and Blue series.

“I just don’t want to lose you. I don’t want you to leave.”
“Why would I do that?”
He huffs. “You forget the fact that I know you, William. Better than anyone. You’ve been in my life longer than anyone else. So, I say again. I don’t want you to leave.”
Shit. Does he know something?
“Well, I’m not going back in the squat,” I say breezily. My eye catches the London university brochure on the side table, and I wince. I can’t tell Blue I’m going. Not yet. Not until I know I’ve been accepted. And even then, I’ll have to choose my time, because he’s going to be upset.
But probably not for long, and that’s how I know it’s finally time for me to go. Blue has this wonderful new life now, and he’s safe and happy. I’d never have gone before, as I’m fiercely protective of him. We’ve been through far too much shit to part ways casually. But now he’s okay, I can leave him, knowing it’s time for me to get on with my own life. I’m going to clear out of York, start a new life where I’m not Will the squatter, Will the homeless man. It’s a plan that’s been growing in my head for a long while. Blue’s the only reason I’ve stayed in York for so long. Before him, I moved on every few months.
There’s a silence on the other end of the phone, and I know he’s noticed my lack of a promise not to leave. No wonder. He’s sharp as a knife, and I have never promised Blue anything I didn’t mean.
“Will?” he says.
The doorbell rings and rescues me. “Ooh, there’s someone at the door,” I say. “I do hope it’s not that spooky woman again who thinks her dolls are haunted.”
He allows himself to be diverted. “Fucking hell, I hope not. That shit was so creepy.”
“Only you would get a sinister Barbie.”
“It wasn’t a Barbie,” he says snippily. “Those dolls were antique and expensive. Collector’s items.”
“Genevieve and Trixie are angry, and I sense it,” I say in a high voice, imitating the lady owner of the dolls who was nearly as creepy as them.
He starts to laugh. “I can still see your face.”
“Was it wondering why you dragged me along with you? I’m pretty sure it was.”
The bell rings again, and I see a figure peering in through the glass. “Jem’s here,” I say without thinking and then roll my eyes and wait for it.
It doesn’t take long. “Jem? Really? How lovely for Jem to be calling on you. Should I speak to him?”
“Why?” I sigh.
“I think I should speak to him. After all, I am responsible for you. If he’s courting you, I should know his intentions. They might be… nefarious, and I know that nefarious things make you drop your briefs quicker than Usain Bolt on the starter pistol.”
