The cereal crunched under my spoon before I shoved another bite in my mouth. I was tired after being up too late, crying into my proverbial pillow. While there were no actual tears, it was a close thing.
Chase was dancing in his seat next to me, eating the same cereal, but he had a glass of milk instead of the mug of coffee that I was reaching for when he sing-songed, “I have two dads. La-la-la. I have more love. Two dads.”
I had to assume he meant Griffin and me, and I debated internally whether to ask. Maybe ignoring it was best. He’d only started calling me dad this week, and I didn’t want to jinx it. Though he could call me anything he wanted, and I’d be fine with it.
“Dad?”
“Yes, Chase?” I sipped my coffee and looked into his gorgeous eyes that looked like Jills. And my own.
“I have two dads and that’s awesome. But know what would be more awesomer?”
He was too cute for me to correct the language. Sometimes, you had to let shit slide, and it was early. “What, Chase?”
“If I had three. Then I’d be the luckiest boy in school. Three dads.”
It was a good thing I didn’t have food in my mouth to choke on. “Uh, how you going to get another dad, Chase?”
“You have to marry Unc Ryker.”
I was floored. I didn’t know what to say. It was totally time to change the subject, but I couldn’t deny how much I missed Ryker being around. And it was obvious Chase did, too.
“Well.” I could feel every part of me giving in, but I had to do it slowly. “How about if we go to the final race this weekend? If we leave soon, we can catch the second moto at least and then see Ryker afterward.”
Chase jumped up from his chair and screamed.
“Finish your breakfast first, kiddo.” It was the weekend before Christmas. The Supercross season would be starting in January, and there was only one week off between this series and that one. I didn’t know what that would look like for us, but I wanted to find out. I wanted to see what we could work out between us. Maybe Ryker could fit in better than I thought. If he would…
There were a lot of ifs, but Chase accepted everything, me, Ryker, and even Griffin, at face value. Didn’t I need to do the same? Maybe Ryker didn’t need to do anything except love us.
I picked up my cell to make some calls and get a press pass.
