The story that started it all…
Matt understands labels: law student, athlete, heterosexual. He has goals: graduate and begin his career in law. One fateful night, Matt tags along with his gay roommate to a dance club and everything changes.
Aaron doesn’t believe in labels, and he’s leery of straight curious men. Aaron can’t deny the attraction between him and Matt, he is reluctant to start anything with someone who is still dealing with what this new label means—especially when that someone has a girlfriend.
REVIEW:
A part of the series Better Than by Ms. Lane Hayes, this is the story of Matt and Aaron. It is sort of Bi-ReAwakening (because Matt did have a brief relationship/interaction? with a guy a few years back), Gay-For-You trope wherein Matt falls for our out-and-proud Aaron Mendez. Aaron is proud of who he is. He is OUT and coming from a catholic family, that is saying a lot. Although his father still hasn’t gotten use to his sexuality, his mother and siblings have accepted him. He works for a fashion magazine but he hopes to become a Professional Photographer one day soon. Meanwhile Matthew Sullivan is finishing law school and doing his internship at a very prestigious law firm.
To say that Matt was totally attracted/enamored with Aaron even from the first moment they met is an understatement. They met one night while Matt and his friends accompanied their friend and roommate, Curt, to a gay club. When he saw this gorgeous human dancing gracefully, he couldn’t seem to take his eyes off him. And before Matt knew it, he was dancing with Aaron. After that first meeting, they met a few more times in different clubs and they just started talking and hanging out.
Aaron is wary of straight guys, as he should, he has been burned before. At the beginning of the year, he had resolved that he will never again be with someone who is still in the closet, someone who can’t be his true self, thus dragging Aaron back with him into the closet which Aaron refuses to go back into. When he started hanging out with Matt, he was clear about these things and Matt agreed that they could just be friends. For now.
When things started to feel like they are already in a relationship, while Matt still hasn’t acknowledge who Aaron is in his life, it was put to test one day. While they (meaning Aaron) were shopping, Matt was seen by his ex-girlfriend and because Matt failed to introduce Aaron as someone special to him, things became really complicated. So much so that Aaron told him that he cannot do what they are doing anymore. That they each have their own different paths and they are not meant to be.
I love Matt and Aaron’s love story, how it started, how it had its ups and downs and how Matt had to do something that would convince Aaron that he is serious about them and he needs just one more chance to prove it to Aaron. And although the story is only from Matt’s POV, it still doesn’t let you guess how Aaron is feeling because it is fully described, either by Matt or Aaron’s friends.
Ms. Lane Hayes is one of the best writers we have in this genre, and this series, in particular, Matt and Aaron’s stories are one of the best stories she has ever written. Congratulations Ms. Lane Hayes!
