A Foot in the Door by Vinni George
Open Doors, Book 3
The student…
If he wants a job when he finishes grad school, Tanner Brown needs to get a foot in the door. But when he arrives at the country’s largest statistics conference to find he has nowhere to stay, he’s not sure it’s worth it. Especially when he realizes his hot faculty crush just witnessed his embarrassment from a front row seat.
The professor…
Dr. Beckett James is happily focused on his career until one of his former students slides into his line of sight. Tanner is brilliant and engaging, and when he ends up without a room, Beckett has no choice but to offer him a place to stay for the weekend. Even if it means testing his restraint.
The problem…
When their conference fling turns into an on-campus complication, Tanner and Beckett will have to control the variables that threaten to keep them apart or risk losing their chance at a happy ending before it’s even begun.
A Foot in the Door is the third full-length novel in the Open Doors series featuring a statistics professor who makes a mean curry, a ginger-haired student with a bright future, and an offer neither can refuse.

A gust of wind blew through the door. Someone had clearly missed the Please use the revolving door sign, and a flurry of snow followed, making the lobby temporarily look like the inside of a snow globe before the flakes fell flat and wet to the marble floor, creating a slippery-when-wet situation. No sooner had I thought the words than the young man who’d blown in with the snow skidded across the floor, windmilling his arms to keep from falling as his rolling suitcase similarly slid across the floor. His hand connected with the brass rail of a luggage cart, and he just managed to stay on his feet as the cart started to roll. The echoing clang of his roller bag handle hitting the floor made everyone in the lobby who wasn’t already staring turn to look. The guy bent to retrieve his bag and came up to notice everyone watching him. A flush of bright pink stained his cheeks, and he turned away quickly, hustling to the check-in desk.
I watched him go. There was something vaguely familiar about the man and the flush of his cheeks, but since he’d had his coat collar and a scarf pulled up around his face and a knitted wool hat covering his head, I couldn’t be sure. The professional and academic statistics community was a small one, so I’d probably met him at a past conference or something, but as I thought about it, that didn’t seem right.
Marcel waved a hand in front of my face, and I reluctantly turned to look at him. “Uh-oh. I know that look.”
I cut my attention back to him. “What look?”
Marcel lifted an elegant hand and gestured to my face. “That look. That look that says ‘I’m a knight in shining armor, please allow me to rescue you.’ The look that makes you go out of your way to help little old ladies cross the street.”
“Really? I don’t do that.”
The scoff Marcel let out echoed through the lobby. “Right. And how exactly did we meet?”
He might have a point. We’d met six years ago when his flight had been canceled at LAX after the American Statistical Association conference. Marcel had only attended because he was presenting work with a group of colleagues from Berkeley. I had attended his talk—and instantly become one of his groupies, though he didn’t ever need to know that tidbit of information—and I recognized him as I’d passed him arguing with a gate attendant. I had swooped in to take him to dinner and help him find another flight back to Paris.
“That was one time. And I’m regretting it now.”
A smile split Marcel’s face. “Okay, how about when you picked up the tab when Julian’s card got declined at dinner when we were all in San Francisco. Or when you stepped in to moderate a whole day of panels at the ASAC in Miami after one of the organizers went into early labor. If I recall correctly, you also sent her flowers at the hospital since her partner had to drive down from Jacksonville and went to visit her and the baby until her partner got there so she wouldn’t be alone. Or when you gave your cab to that couple whose car wouldn’t start after dinner in Denver. Or that time—”
“Okay, I get it, but don’t tell me you wouldn’t have done the same in all of those situations.”
Marcel laughed. “No. I wouldn’t have. And I don’t think that makes me an asshole or anything. You just like to be the guy who saves the day. And that”—he gestured to where the man who’d almost fallen was in a heated conversation with the receptionist—“looks like just your brand of chaos. You are a sucker for a damsel in distress.”
