REVIEW:
This is Book Five of the Godstone Saga from Ms. Jocelynn Drake. In this book, our boys are travelling to Ilon for King Caelan Talos of Erya to bond with the God of Wisdom, Lore.
As we recall from the last book, Wings of Fire, our boys were in the Isle of Stone to save Drayce and for Caelan to bond with the Goddess of Fire, Caris. In the Isle of Stone, Caelan also found the family he thought he didn’t have anymore, from his father’s side. Book four was so beautiful.
Ilon has been a long-time ally of Erya, so everyone thought, Caelan included. And that this trip will be the easiest in terms of being able to see the Godstone immediately. But, as in all their trips so far, nothing went as planned. What they thought would be easy became complicated the minute they stepped on Ilon soil. So much so that they had to split up going into the capital because, except for Adrian Westergren, all their faces are quite known. Adrian went with Caelan, while Drayce, Eno and Rayne found another way to enter the capital.
Ilon is now occupied by New Rosanthe soldiers with Safa leading them for sure. But our brave heroes don’t know the real situation. They are still waiting for Rayne’s informant, the Gray Fox. So far, they haven’t seen any destructions. The citizens are going about their business as usual, although there is a curfew set. Otherwise everything looks normal, well as normal as it could be with Gods fighting and Caelan and Safa going after the Godstone.
When Adrian met an old friend from his days as a thief, they learned a little about what is happening in Ilon, although they still don’t know where the government stands in all of it. His friend offered them a place to stay for the night. Meanwhile, Rayne, Eno and Drayce has gotten into a little situation but it is a good thing that Rayne’s contact was able to send someone to whisk them away just in the nick of time. Something wonderful happened then. Although Eno wasn’t able to see it at first, but Drayce and Rayne did. The person sent to rescue them look very much like him, albeit a little smaller in stature. Otherwise, as Drayce would put it, they could be twins.
When the group reunited, they updated each other with what they have learned. Things were straightened out between Eno and Davi. Then they started planning how to locate the Godstone and find the Prime Minister. But along the way, a lot of things came to light about what Ilon has been doing behind their backs. How Ilon is looking less and less an ally but rather a traitor and manipulator. When they located the Prime Minister, a lot of these things were confirmed. They also learned the location of the Godstone.
Caelan has been trying his best not to show his companions what is truly going on with him, with four gods in his mind, being bonded to all four of them, and what’s it doing to his health and psyche. But his friends are not stupid, they know that there is more going on but as usual Caelan is trying to save them from it. Everything comes to its head soon enough and Caelan couldn’t keep things to himself anymore, especially when all his friends were summoned by Nyx, the Dead God (Which I will keep calling him even though he claims he is not dead, because I think he should be!).
When they did finally locate the God of Wisdom, Lore, everything was revealed. And although Caelan already suspected early on, as far back as their first trip ever, that the Gods were only using him for their own selfish purposes, he never thought the extent they will go in order to cover up something as petty as jealousy and envy.
The truth has finally been revealed. Now it is up to Caelan to end it all. Save Thia, end the Gods’ conflict with the Goddess of the Hunt and Safa, and ultimately confront all the other Gods who have been using Caelan and his friends for the mistake that they committed hundreds of years ago. In the end of this installment, something amazing (I truly hope) happens that gave me palpitations and so much hope.
Once again Ms. Jocelynn Drake, you astound me! This has been an amazing journey so far and I LITERALLY cannot wait for the last book. I am hoping that my favorite family from the Isle of Stone (especially one particular Dragon and our favorite Grandfather) comes to visit and join in the last stand against the Goddess of the Hunt!
