Grady Summerville is facing a slow and agonizing death, but has come to terms with his disease and doesn’t fear dying. However, fate has other ideas, presenting him with a future thanks to Max Steele. Grady owes his very life to Max, and as his health improves, finds himself falling head over heels with his savior.
Max Steele has been forced to leave his pack and everyone he knows to move to the West Territory to be a blood donor for Grady. He knows it’s the right thing to do, but it doesn’t mean he has to like it.
As tensions escalate between the two packs, Max finds his loyalty tested and is torn between following his alpha, or following his heart.
If Max doesn’t make the sacrifice then it will be Grady making the ultimate sacrifice and paying with his life.
“I… ah…”
Grady’s thin hand moved to the collar of his shirt, plucking at the button there as he kept his eyes on Max. Max had to give him credit for keeping the eye contact despite his obvious nerves. Not that he blamed him for being on edge—it wasn’t every day you met the man who was going to save your life.
Marrok placed a hand on Grady’s shoulder. “Grady, are you okay?”
Max’s jaw tightened. Marrok’s touch was light, thank God, given how frail Grady’s shoulder was, but despite the gentle touch, Max wanted to push Marrok’s hand away. He even found himself leaning forward to stand before he remembered he had no right to make such a gesture.
“I’m fine,” Grady answered, only glancing up briefly at his friend before returning his gaze to Max.
Thankfully, at Grady’s reassurance, Marrok pulled back and retook his position beside Zander.
Max shifted his focus back to Grady. He didn’t look fine, Max thought, he looked anything but. The poor guy appeared exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes and forehead creased with worry. Even if he disregarded the physical signs—the unnaturally thin body, the pale skin, and the gentle tremor in his hands—the expression on Grady’s face made it clear just how not fine he was. Although being on edge was to be expected given his current situation. Max was surprised by the sudden desire to ease Grady’s pain, and hoped whatever this treatment plan was, it was something miraculous, something that would work quickly. He’d been reluctant to leave the West and move to the East Territory but now he was here, all those doubts fled. The inconvenience he felt at leaving his home, leaving his friends and family, and abandoning his business, seemed small and insignificant compared to what Grady was going through.
“I’m honestly happy to answer any of your questions,” Max said. “Given we’re going to be spending so much time with each other,” he paused and looked briefly at Marrok and Zander, who briefly nodded confirming his assumption, “it’s important we get to know each other.”
“I know you’re right,” Grady said, but there was still doubt in his eyes and his voice was low. “I’m just not sure what it is that I want to know. I mean, I don’t know anything about you, but I don’t know where to start.”
“How about I just tell you a little about myself to begin with, then you can ask me whatever else you feel like you need to know?”
“Sure. Sounds good.”
Max relaxed back into his seat figuring if he appeared at ease, it would go a long way to helping dispel the tension in the room. Ideally, he wished Zander and Marrok would leave so he could talk to Grady alone, but he understood they were never going to leave their friend with a stranger, and one from the West at that. A small part of him was grateful to know Grady had these two huge shifters to look out for him. But I’m here now. Fuck! The wave of possession nearly knocked the wind out of him. He sucked in a breath.
