Chapter 4: Iason Leyland
“My sister would never forgive me for going out with you,” Orion said as we finished eating.
“I think I could endure her wrath for the pleasure of dating you.”
His cheeks flushed beautifully. “I meant for dinner. Going out with you for dinner. Without her. That’s what I meant.”
He was so damn cute. I couldn’t resist the urge to tease him a little more. “Oh, but she would be fine with us dating?”
“No, she would straight up murder me.” The utter certainty in his voice caused me to laugh.
“I’d protect you.”
I had to hold back my smirk when it sent a visible tremor through him. Clearly flummoxed, he protested, “No, you don’t understand. She’s practically in love with you. Trust me, she would take it as a personal affront and betrayal of the worst kind.”
“Really?” I asked, although it wasn’t all that surprising after being around Lyra backstage yesterday. She was incapable of hiding her extreme fangirl reactions, which entertained me. Dedicated fans like her were responsible for my career being such a meteoric rise.
“She loves you and your music.”
“What about you?”
“I love you, too.” He turned bright red when he realized what he had said. “I mean—I like you, too. And love your music. But I didn’t mean—I’m not—it’s not like I’m in love with you or anything weird like that.”
His panicked rambling made me want to kiss him into silence. “Yet.”
“Yet?” His voice came out as a startled squeak.
“The night is still young.”
“I couldn’t—I’m not going to fall in love with you. Not that you’re unlovable because you’re amazing. I’m not—” He gave up protesting and hid his face in his hands with a groan. “Forget it. I’m digging myself deeper into this hole and making everything worse.”
Orion’s embarrassed bumbling was precious. His flustered reaction gave me hope I was making more progress with him than I thought. “But you’re so cute when you’re doing it.”
“Cute?”
“Very.” I couldn’t stop my broad smile at his reactions. “I won’t say no to hearing you explain why you love me, too.”
His adorable pout drew my attention to his full lips. “I didn’t mean it like that!”
“Then how did you mean it?”
He drank water to avoid immediately having to answer. “I appreciate your music.”
“Is that all?” I asked in mock disappointment.
“Your lyrics are wonderful.” His expression showed his concern that he had somehow insulted me. “And your voice is so beautiful.”
There was a sense of awe in his tone that I loved. “And my face isn’t half-bad, either.”
I finally made him laugh again. “You don’t need me to tell you that you’re attractive,” he said in amusement, losing some of his self-consciousness from earlier.
“No, but my ego loves hearing it.”
His laughter left me eager to leave and move on with the rest of our night—provided I could get him to agree to keep it going.
As if summoned by my thoughts, our server appeared to deliver the check. I picked it up before he had the chance.
He reached for his wallet. “How much do I owe?”
That he intended to pay rather than accept a free dinner from me said so much about him. I pretended to look over the bill. “It says here you owe me a confession about what your favorite song of mine is.”
“It does not!” His laughter delighted me. “Seriously, how much do I owe?”
Once again, I acted as if I was closely studying the bill. “I double-checked the math. It clearly says that’s your part of the bill.” I put my credit card in the holder before handing it over to the server. “But I could be persuaded into accepting a kiss instead, though.”
He failed to smother his soft squeak of surprise at my offer. God, he was driving me wild without even trying.
