Henry should have kept on walking by when he spotted the younger man sitting alone on the beach. He should never have stopped, never sat down, and certainly never kissed him. Because now Henry is experiencing feelings. And he doesn’t like it one bit.

Things happen for a reason, even random hook-ups. Ben was supposed to get off work early that night. It was no accident the sexy stranger stumbled on his beach hiding spot. The Kiss was destined, as well as what happened afterward. It wasn’t as if Ben believed in love at first sight, but this was damn close.

It’s a good thing Henry lives three-thousand miles away or he might do something stupid, like ask for Ben’s phone number.

Ben’s hometown boss begs him to return and he agrees, only regretting not being able to say goodbye to his snarky divorce lawyer. But all the wanting in the universe isn’t going to bring them together again, he doesn’t even know Henry’s last name. Besides, home is on the west coast, not Maine.

Sometimes the universe is a funny place.

“Raising his glass, Ben made a toast.

“To your parents.”

Henry’s gaze sharpened and Ben worried he’d gone too far, reminded Henry he was in Stoney Brook to say goodbye to his parents, not to hook up. But instead of being angry, he smiled and raised his own glass.

“To my parents, Tom and Lisbeth, who would thoroughly approve of wine and potato chips in bed.”

Simultaneously, they tipped their glasses, then Ben slipped under the covers, fluffing the pillows so he could prop himself next to Henry.

“Salt and vinegar pairs excellently with chardonnay. I never would’ve guessed it.”

Ben nodded sagely. “I’m a prodigy, a… what’s the word… sommelier prodigy.”

“Do sommeliers pair wine with food?”

“This one does. Salt and vinegar for the win.”

The suite phone rang, startling both of them. When it rang a second time and Henry hadn’t moved to answer it, Ben raised his eyebrows.

“Are you going to get that?”

Henry sighed and rolled away from Ben to answer the antique phone.

“Hello? Evening, Mrs. Schnell. Yes, I am aware dinner is served in fifteen minutes.” There was a pause and Ben could swear that Henry’s cheeks reddened. “Yes, one second.” He put his hand over the receiver. “Mrs. Bird and Mrs. Schnell would like to know if you will be joining me for dinner. You don’t have to, they will ask you all sorts of questions, but on the other hand, they put on an incredible spread. And tonight, lobster is on the menu.”

Did he want to have dinner? Making this something that bordered on a date and not just a hookup? Ben glanced at Henry and thought he saw a whisper of hope that Ben would agree to stay.”
