Jackals Wild by Abby Kaitz
Quiet, studious Adam Hatchard is ready to reinvent himself and be the leading man in his own life.
- Survive his first frat party? Check.
- Talk to the hot TA in math class? Halfway(ish) there.
- Coexist in peace with his Neanderthal roommate? Send help.
From day one, Carter Ellison has given Adam nothing but cocky smirks, secondhand embarrassment, and dirty underwear all over their room—the perfect storm for Most Annoying Roommate Ever.
His ridiculously toned body deserving to be the eighth wonder of the world is beside the point.
But Carter has a secret: an unconventional side hustle involving cameras and a distinct lack of clothing. When Adam stumbles upon Carter’s online alter ego, the last thing he expects to feel is…compassion.
And when Carter asks him to hold the camera? Adam discovers that there’s more to his roommate than the irritating frat boy persona Carter puts on.
What begins as a way for both of them to earn extra cash develops into something more. Something involving longer-than-appropriate stares, stolen touches, midnight confessions—and the realization that Adam just may have found his own leading man.

The hotel they chose—which more closely resembled a bed and breakfast—was a local, family-owned affair on the edge of town: cheaper than the chain hotels near the university and far enough from campus that they weren’t likely to run into anyone they knew.
“Huh,” Carter said as they stepped off the bus, “I guess those online photos failed to capture the Satan chic vibe.”
Before them stood what looked like a cousin of the Amityville Horror house. Blood-red paint peeled from one side. A tire swing rocked back and forth despite the lack of wind. Dead leaves and mud tracks littered the front porch, which also displayed an array of power tools and broken pieces of plywood. Perhaps the only friendly thing about the place was the green and yellow sign above the door: Welcome to Birdwhistle Inn!
“This is a hideout for serial killers!” Adam looked back towards the road, but the bus was already out of sight.
“We’ll be fine. This place has a ton of five-star reviews.”
“Can we really trust a bunch of Internet strangers?”
Carter rubbed Adam between the shoulder blades. What he actually wanted to do was pull his roommate close and make out on top of all those crunchy dead leaves. But that would defeat the whole purpose of coming here. They needed to focus.
“This is Greenloch, Adman. The biggest crime is someone not saying hi when they pass you on the street.”
As much as the inn resembled a horror movie on the outside, the interior screamed grandma’s house. The moment they stepped inside, they were bombarded with the smell of vanilla, floral couches, floral wallpaper, and bird figurines everywhere.
And there was grandma behind the reception desk, smiling like two of her favorite grandsons had just popped over for a visit. “Good afternoon, boys.”
“Hi, ma’am.” Carter put on his flirty-polite voice. “Would you happen to have a room available?”
Grandma’s smile grew wider. “Ayuh. The Hummingbird Suite.”
“Suite?” Adam gave Carter a worried look. “That sounds expensive.”
“Oh, all of our rooms are called suites, deah.” Grandma winked. “Marketing.”
“Perfect,” Carter said. “We’ll take it.”
Grandma wrote something in a large notebook. At least she wasn’t using her pen to stab them and draw blood for a satanic ritual—although Carter was prepared to dropkick any menace that threatened Adam, demons included.
“We don’t often get a mess of cunnin’ boys around heah,” Grandma said. “Chuppta?”
Carter fished out his wallet. “Just looking for a quiet place to study.” He adjusted his backpack as if it were full of heavy textbooks. “Midterms are coming up. But it’s Family Weekend at Bramburgh and even the library is crazy. We beat Princeton last night and everyone’s kind of using that as an excuse to act even rowdier. We figured the farther we are from campus, the better.”
“Ayuh. I hope you deahs find the peace and quiet you need at Birdwhistle Inn. I apologize for the mess in the dooryard. We’re in the middle of remodeling.”
“No trouble at all.” Carter took the key she handed him and returned a mischievous smile. “Aren’t we all in the middle of remodeling, in the grand scheme of things?”
