Why must Fate insist on having the last word?
Spoiled rich kid, Riko Walker, has spent the last summer roaming the New England coast, working hard to maintain the rudderless image his father believes. Riko doesn’t need his father or anybody else. Until a beating leaves him broken and alone in the middle of nowhere.
Braxton Harper’s inner voice screams “don’t get involved!” when he finds a bloodied and beaten young man in a heap on the roadside. He’s gotten good at ignoring that voice, though, and loads the stranger into his truck, promising him a place to rest and heal.
The Titanic-sized chip on Riko’s shoulder makes Braxton want to drop this ungrateful brat and be on his way. After all, no one handed Braxton anything in life. He’s worked hard for what he has. If Riko doesn’t want help, why bother?
Fate has no patience for their stubbornness, throwing the two together time after time. How can sparks fly between two so different men? And can move they move past ugly beginnings to find their common ground?
This story includes scenes involving homophobia and animal welfare that, while done in a caring and thoughtful manner, may be disturbing to some people. Reader discretion is advised.
REVIEW:
Another new-to-author that I got to enjoy through this series.
Enrique “Riko” Walker is living his dream of freedom. He’s graduated from college and setting out for an amazing ride on his brand new motorcycle with his club up the Atlantic Coast. His parents final parting gifts seemed a bit odd but he was too excited to dwell on them. When his club decides to change course he decides to ride continue his ride north with another group against his leader’s advise. Just when he figures out why he was warned it all goes to hell. Left for dead beside the road with his new bike gone he’s luckily found by successful Stoney Brook restauranteur Braxton Harper. Braxton can’t leave the young man once he finds him but wants nothing to do with the mouthy brat. When they keep getting thrust together in situations Braxton realizes he is attracted to the brat. When he saves Riko again, and a small pup, from the sound he has his answer. But what happens next?
This moved a bit fast for me. I liked the story but Riko and Braxton seemed like oil and water and then suddenly “clicked”. I mean, two near-death experiences definitely took the wind out of his sails. But the second he was in Braxton’s home he was also sharing his bed after one kiss. Their chemistry did work. And once Riko settled down and showed that he wasn’t just a hard worker but he was smart too it seemed to all fall into place.
I am a bit confused with what happened to Ben though. Riko and him seemed to be good friends and al of a sudden he’s gone?
I have really enjoyed this series in Stoney Brook, Maine and the Tall Shops festival. And all this talk about lobsters in these books are making me really hungry.
