He didn’t give true peace. “It is the living who bear the burdens of the past. You think that those who die care? Angels are given peace, free of attachment to the memories they have of being mortal, free of mortal weakness. Those who are left behind are the ones who must find a way forward.”
War crowded Uriel against the wall. He lowered his nose to the space below Uriel’s ear. “When a soul lingers, it cries for help,” he whispered. “Pain isn’t exclusive to the mortals. When they hurt, when they cry, do you give them relief? Do you help them?” War lifted his head, pressing his lips to Uriel’s temple. “No. I did. So go fuck yourself.”
