CHAPTER 5: Dan
A boy who’d been tossed aside and unappreciated. Gerald never knew the treasure he’d walked away from. A mistake I wouldn’t be foolish enough to make. Not only did I see Ethan, my heart yearned for him. How many times had I scoffed at the notion of love at first sight?
Too many, because love is a choice. A decision made with one’s eyes and heart wide open. Attraction, lust, ardor… no matter the word choice, it all came down to liking someone enough to desire having them in your life.
At least, that’s what I’d always sworn to be true.
Until I’d met Ethan yesterday and was completely bowled over. He’d caught my interest when he’d imperiously told me to get out. My protective instincts were called forward during his panic attack. But he’d stolen a piece of my heart by asking me to stay. By giving me the gift of his trust.
Now I had one week to prove I was worthy to be Ethan’s Daddy… prove it to both of us. And that started with keeping my word. I heard movement in the bedroom, followed by a toilet flushing. Perfect… time to begin our day.
Setting aside the newspaper I’d been reading, I chugged down the last few swigs of coffee in my cup as I rose. As I headed toward the bed, I slicked both hands over my hair and straightened my waistband. Cupping a hand over my mouth for a breath check made me regret the coffee, but the mints in my pocket solved that problem.
When I walked in the room, Ethan’s head snapped up from one of the drawers I’d given him with a deer in the headlights look. “Oh. You are here. I thought maybe you were gone and I should get dressed.” Ethan bit his lip, lacing his fingers together and nervously twisting his hands while staring just past me.
My brave boy looked out of his element, truly uncomfortable for the first time, as if he didn’t know what to do. That’s fine, he didn’t need to. That’s where Daddy needed to step in.
“Good morning, sweet boy. Sorry I wasn’t here when you woke up, I wanted to let you rest.”
“But you left me all alone.” Ethan blinked twice, his plump bottom lip pouting. His eyes twitched to mine just long enough for me to see the mischievous gleam sparkling there.
Okay, boy. I know what you want.

About Susan:
As an avid reader and big romance fan myself, I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination. My stories are filled with humor, a few tears, and the underlying message to not give up hope, even in the darkest of times, because life can change on a dime when you least expect it. This theme comes from a lifetime of lessons learned on my own hard journey through the pains of poverty, the loss of more loved ones than I’d care to count, and the struggles of living through chronic illnesses. Life can be hard, but it can also be good! Through it all I’ve found that love, laughter, and family can make all the difference, and that’s what I try to bring to every tale I tell.
I’m a happily married mom with one snarky teenage boy, and three grown “kids of my heart.” I’m more widely known for my mpreg writings as Susi Hawke; this new name is a departure from that. Whether written by Susan or Susi, the books are filled with that all-important love, laughter, and family I mentioned; the only difference is that this name has no male pregnancy. I look forward to sharing my stories with you, and to bringing more romance and laughter into this world that needs it so very badly.
