Lord Garrington’s Vessel by S. Rodman
It’s 2022. Magic isn’t supposed to be real.
Arranged marriages aren’t supposed to exist.
How are gay arranged marriages for the purpose of magic a thing?
Fen has grown up all alone in boarding schools. Never meeting any of his family. At his graduation, his older brother turns up to take him home. Except Fen discovers he is the result of a shameful affair and not actually related to Lord Garrington at all. Yet, for appearance’s sake, everyone must continue to believe they are brothers.
To make matters worse, an indiscretion reveals that Fen is a vessel. Someone who grows magic but cannot wield it. Magic can only escape his body and not kill him by regularly submitting his body to a mage. Hence the crazy arranged marriage idea.
It’s a shame the only mage he wants is his arrogant and obnoxious fake brother.
Lord Xander Garrington, like all British nobility, is secretly a mage.
He was only supposed to pay the boy off, but Fen turned out to be outrageously pretty. Then he turns out to be a vessel. The opportunity is too great to miss.
He needs to pretend Fen is his brother and sell his stepmother’s bastard to the highest bidder. Securing the best possible match to advance the family’s fortunes.
If only Xander’s emotions would obey.
He is supposed to sell his fake brother, not fall for him.

Xander scrolled through the morning news on his tablet. There was nothing noteworthy. Which was good. Xander preferred things to be calm and orderly.
The boy walked into the breakfast room, and Xander scowled in annoyance. It felt like an invasion of privacy. This was his home. He did not appreciate strangers walking around it. Especially when they acted like they had every right to.
Fen was wearing an ankle length red silk dressing gown. The color contrasted vividly against his sleep tousled silver hair.
The white silk pajamas he wore underneath looked like they’d slip off beautifully. The young man was completely covered. The only skin that was showing was on his face and hands, yet somehow it was the most alluring thing Xander had ever seen. It was almost worth the intrusion.
He was going to have to take the boy to get this annoying attraction out of the way. He couldn’t live like this. It would be unbearable. One taste should be enough. Then he could treat Fen as the brother he was going to pretend to the world he was.
Xander frowned at the thought. It was a terrible idea. He was a grown man. He could control himself, and that was exactly what he was going to do. This boy would not get the better of him.
Fen plonked himself down at the far end of the table and reached for a crumpet. Making himself far too much at home.
Xander glared, but Fen didn’t even look at him.
“There are some rules,” said Xander.
Fen just glanced at him, eyebrow raised. He moved the butter dish closer and waited.
“No one can know that you are not my brother. My father being cuckolded makes him look weak. Weakness is a death sentence,” intoned Xander.
Sapphire eyes stared at him for a moment before shaking his head ruefully.
“You know it’s twenty, twenty-two, right? Your enemies aren’t going to march over the hill with their armies.” Fen said dismissively.
“No, they are not. But battles are still fought and families wiped out.” Xander said tonelessly.
Fen visibly shuddered at his words, eyes widening in alarm. He seemed to understand how serious it was, which pleased Xander. The boy had likely been taught some version of how his mother’s family had been destroyed.
He watched the boy spread butter on his crumpet. The way his long, elegant fingers moved was hypnotic. Xander shook his head to rouse himself.
“I’m going to host a gathering so you can be introduced. You will be charming. You will flirt. It is in your interest to gain as good a match as possible.” Xander explained.
Fen took a bite of his crumpet and Xander tried not to be distracted by the melted butter brushing soft pink lips. The boy gave an undignified snort laugh.
“Something funny?” growled Xander in warning.
“You, sounding like Jane Austen.” retorted Fen before taking another bite of his crumpet.
