BLURB:
As young men struggling to deal with their paranormal abilities, Michael and Dane found relief when they found each other. Michael could hear the dead. Dane could feel them. Together, they seemed the perfect pair. But chasing ghosts is a demanding lifestyle, and despite their attraction to each other, their tumultuous experiences drove them apart.
Eight years later, their paths cross again. They’ve been pitted against each other in a competition to exorcise a ghost from a B&B. Now that they’re changed men, Dane is determined to win Michael back. But Michael is distracted by Jericho, a ghost with the face of an angel but with a core of cruelty. A ghost who knows their deepest, darkest secrets.
REVIEW:
Michael is complicated. He believes others see him differently from how he views himself. Despite the constant paranormal disappointment, Michael remains a trier. He saw hope where others spied morbid curiosity. When the owner of a hunted B&B gathers a group of paranormal experts to rid him of a ghost – interesting times are ahead, especially as one of those people is Michael’s ex-lover, Dane. However, until Michael figures out the dead, how can he hope to understand the living? Despite people wanting him to try, he cannot change who he is.
From page one, A Conspiracy Of Ghosts is a page-turner that I believe to be a gem in the rough.
The story is told in the third person, mainly in the past tense, from Michael and Dane’s viewpoints. Technicalities let it down a bit, but the author’s enthusiasm for the tale comes through providing an excellent and engaging read – which makes me forgive some things. Landscaping is limited yet appropriate, but what impressed me was the emotion that blared through the pages.
I’m showing my age here when I say that Dane and Michael reminded me of Sapphire and Steel from the UK’s 80 paranormal series of the same name. One can touch an object and embody its history. The other can sense and engage with the dead. Years ago, these powers drove Dane and Michael apart and presently made them a forceful team. Michael holds so much inside, but the chemistry between them is fantastic, and their journey back to each other was a delight to read.
As for the extended cast, they were an eclectic mix of the helpful, distressed, obnoxious, and dangerous. Jericho is a complicated ghost who evoked a whole range of emotions within me. He’s a disturbed individual who can extract memories and use them against people – the results added twists and turns – in short, some super reading.
A Conspiracy Of Ghosts is full of drama, suspense, and plenty of paranormal activity, much of which was new to my reading tastes – I liked it.
