Axel flipped me off but then looked away again. “Yeah. I don’t tell you everything.” My stomach soured. He was hiding something and I hated the thought of it. Maybe I should’ve tackled him to the couch and made him spill all his secrets. I didn’t hate the idea, but instead, I dropped my voice to a murmur. “Hey. It’s okay. I promise, it’ll be okay. What’s wrong?” When he met my gaze, his gray eyes were full of something I couldn’t quite identify. “Maybe I’m just no good for anyone, you know?” “No good? Man, you’re a catch. A motherfucking catch, you hear me? You’re hot, you’re funny, and you’re smart. What else is there?” “You think I’m hot?” A tiny smirk formed on his lips. “I don’t. But I mean, other guys do. Right? Obviously. You got asked out by one and everything. You’re clearly attractive to someone. Objectively, you’re a good-looking dude. I mean, right?” Shut up, I berated myself. You’re rambling. He chuckled. “Okay. Well, thanks, I think.” “Are you attracted to people? Like other guys? I mean, you might be asexual and that’s totally cool too.” “I’m not asexual.” “Are you sure? Because if you are, that’s—” He held up a hand. “Sawyer, I’m not asexual. Believe me.” I wondered what made him so certain but I trusted him to know himself and to be honest with me about it. “Okay, well… what’s the issue then?” “I don’t know. Maybe I’m just… bad at this dating stuff. I haven’t dated in, like, forever. At least two years, since I started grad school. And before that, I had barely any experience dating. Every time I think about trying, my stomach gets all tied up in knots and everything just feels wrong. What if I’m bad at it?” “Bad at what?” “I don’t know, everything. Dating. Kissing.” He hesitated, his cheeks flushing pink. “Sex. All of it.” I laughed. “That’s not possible, man. You couldn’t be bad at all of it. You just need to learn how. It takes practice.” “Sure. But—” “Here, I’ll be the judge. Kiss me.” The words were out before I knew what I’d said. The moment my brain processed them, my cheeks flooded with heat, burning to the tips of my ears. Had I really just said that? I looked at Axel, who had gone bright red as well. Yep, I sure had.
