With all of his mates assembled, Sawyer Smith should be ready for his own version of the end game. He must defeat the god of air, and restore both of their broken magics to all of the realms. There’s only one problem: He still doesn’t know how to do it.
His brother is a god, and is raising the forces of darkness against Sawyer and his mates more quickly than he can mount a defense. It’s time to fight, but Sawyer has too much to lose, to risk disaster. As the final pieces of the puzzle fall into place, Sawyer is faced with a task that seems impossible. He must go into battle without the knowledge or power to win.
So many of his questions remain unanswered, but Sawyer knows one thing: He will stop at nothing to keep his mates safe.
REVIEW:
Macy Blake’s Stop at Nothing closes out The Chosen One series, and it goes out with a bang. All of the twists and turns, surprises and suspense culminate in this story, and it’s a roller coaster ride.
Unlike book four, Nothing Gained, which steadily builds in momentum as the story progresses, Stop at Nothing, contrary to its name, contains a stop and start cadence. It opens with a glimpse of a crucial scene towards the end and then reverses course back to three days earlier. From there, the storyline’s momentum grows, but then the events turn and the action stops, only to pick up speed again. Rinse. Repeat.
This unexpected, unusual cadence keeps us guessing right until the end. You can’t predict what will happen, and that’s part of the fun of this absorbing, addictively entertaining story.
In Stop at Nothing, Ms. Blake again shows off her impressive world-building. I could picture the locations, the characters, and all the sights, sounds and textures through her vivid imagery. She also continues to effectively deliver the suspense, heat, humor and all of the love, lust and sexy times between Sawyer and his guardians/mates. I particularly loved the found family dynamic between them and all of the packs, clans and families.
The plot gets a bit convoluted towards the end, but I was so engrossed it barely registered because I was mesmerized by everything happening. Admittedly, I wish we had more time with the final two mates/guardians, Dakota and Pip. They got short shrift, especially Pip, and I never really felt like they authentically fit into the dynamic of Sawyer and the core five guardians – Draco, Eduard, Henry, Andvari and Seaward.
Ms. Blake wraps everything up nicely in this story and gives us a lovely, warm and fuzzy epilogue that I adore. She also bridges the series seamlessly into the next books in her Chosen One universe reading order – the Magical Mates series, starting with All Kidding Aside.
Michael Dean rounds out his magical vocal performances of the books in this series, and like Stop at Nothing itself, he leaves us on a high note. His enthusiastic in-booth acting comes across clearly and very effectively. You get caught up in the thrall of his performance of this captivating story. He consistently distinguishes between all of the diverse characters contained within its pages – and there are a lot of them. His vocal choices for each of them are intuitive, capturing the essence of the characters as Ms. Blake intended.
The Stop at Nothing audiobook provides hours of immersive entertainment. I highly recommend you grab this audiobook, along with the previous four audiobooks in this series. This is a collection I’ll be listening to on repeat. This series takes pride of place in my audiobook collection as one of the most enjoyable series I’ve listened to. Enjoy.
