Marti is a confident, energetic, and talented florist who has been attracted to standoffish Ivan for the past couple of years. He’d pretty much given up on him until their paths cross again when he has a meeting with the penny-pinching landlord of the flower shop where he works.
Competitive bodybuilder Ivan Detrikov has a landlord father who doesn’t approve of his career choices, or much else in his life. Ivan is well aware of Marti’s interest and he finds the other man captivating, but feels he needs to focus his energy toward his career, and any chance at love is just a distraction.
Everything changes when Ivan encounters Marti at his father’s office. Marti’s “guns blazing” attitude and forceful arguments in favor of the shop where he works captivate Ivan and awaken the attraction that has simmered since their first meeting. But his father’s heartless pursuit of his goals puts Marti’s flower shop dreams in peril and endangers the relationship they are just starting to build.
REVIEW:
Finally, my wish from Book 1 came true and we have Marti’s book. I fell in love with Marti in Heavy Lifting, and I fell even deeper in this one. He’s simply incredible. The amount of energy he brings to the story uplifts everything and everyone. The story was fairly simple. A nasty landlord seeks to screw over a tenant, the landlord’s son falls for the tenant, between the two they outmaneuver the landlord and save the shop. There are a few places where it gets a little trite or formulaic and the resolution edges on deus ex machina, but never actually reaches it.
Despite the slightly tired storyline, the book never drags and never gets boring, thanks mainly to Marti. Ivan is a different kettle of fish and I can’t honestly say I ever got a good look at his personality. There were glimpses of things going on in his head, and hints of deeper issues over and above his relationship with his father but to be honest he remained fairly two dimensional. Without Marti I’m not sure I’d be interested in him much at all.
However, he does have Marti and together they are gold. Along with Susan and Doris they bring a lot of lightness and laughter. Even when things are bad, Marti somehow manages to find some sunshine. I loved how he completely cut down Ivan’s father and stepmother simply by being extremely polite and friendly. Another nice touch was when Jack, from Heavy Lifting made a guest appearance to hand out some extremely good advice to Ivan. I seem to recall Jack, himself receiving similar advice in his story.
Overall, this was another feelgood romance with a lot of energy and lightness. The characters have very different voices and most of them have plenty to say. It’s a short book and easy reading so it would make an excellent coffee time read.
