Edge Lines by Ava Marie Salinger
Fallen Messengers, Book 3
The Gods have come to San Francisco…
Cassius Black and Morgan King’s trip to Ivory Peaks to uncover clues about their past takes an unexpected turn when a rift materializes and war demons attack the capital. Having saved one world by the skin of their teeth, they return to Earth, only to find it has been rocked by ominous quakes bearing a close resemblance to the phenomenon that nearly destroyed the Dryad kingdom.
After defeating demons that emerge from a crevasse in San Francisco, Cassius and Morgan rescue the Wild God Pan from the bottom of a rift with the help of Victor Sloan and the city’s otherwordly. But instead of thanking them, Pan makes a startling demand: rescue his lover and prevent the Spirit Realm from being destroyed, and he will reveal the truth about who Cassius and Morgan are.
Help comes from an unexpected source when a pair of Reapers visit the city and Cassius, Morgan, and Victor soon go hunting for a missing deity who may hold the key to saving all the realms. Can they free the immortals from their prisons and find the powerful artefact that can bend the mind and will of even a God? Or will the enemy who has long manipulated them from the shadows win this war and destroy everything they have come to care for?

It was late by the time Morgan felt Cassius drawing close, the warmth dancing through his belly a sign of the angel’s proximity. It was yet another consequence of the strengthening bond between their soul cores. It had thrilled Morgan to no end the first time he’d sensed it, after their battle with Lucille Hartman.
Right now, he was too pissed to appreciate the connection.
Loki jumped out of his arms where he sat outside brooding on a deck chair, in the dark. The cat dashed across the terrace and slipped through the open sliding doors. A reproachful meow left him when Cassius walked into the apartment seconds later.
“There, there,” the Empyreal crooned. “I know. I missed you too.”
Loki’s remonstrations turned into a satisfied rumble when Cassius picked him up and petted him. Cassius stepped outside. Morgan narrowed his eyes at the imp.
Traitor.
Loki blinked at him innocently.
Cassius’s face tightened when he observed the cigarette in Morgan’s hand. “I thought you’d quit smoking.”
“I needed the distraction,” Morgan grunted, knowing he sounded churlish and not really caring.
He put out the cigarette with a small burst of wind. It was his first in two months and had tasted even worse than he’d thought it would.
Cassius sighed and came over to sit next to him. “Are you going to be like this every time he’s in town?”
The anger that been bubbling inside Morgan all evening exploded in a flurry of furious words.
“You mean, am I gonna be pissed every time my lover gets invited to dinner by his ex and the conniving bastard insists it just be the two of them?! Why, yes. I would have to be fucking dead not to react to that, Cassius!” He glared at the Empyreal. “We spent the whole afternoon trying to work out the reason for those cracks appearing along that ley line. Then you two just waltzed out together at the end of the day as if it were the most natural thing in the world to do!”
Loki leapt down from Cassius’s hold. The demon cat cast an irate glance at them before slinking inside the apartment, tail stiff.
Cassius had weathered Morgan’s outburst with a calm expression.
“Victor knew it would be awkward for me if you joined us.” He hesitated before laying a placatory hand on Morgan’s arm, his tone turning gentle. “It was just dinner between two friends, Morgan. We ate, chatted, had coffee. Nothing more. Victor was a perfect gentleman throughout.”
Instead of calming his ruffled feathers, Cassius’s words only inflamed Morgan more. “He still wants you! It’s as clear as day to everyone, except you, apparently!”
Cassius’s mouth flattened into a thin line.
“Even if that’s true, that doesn’t mean I reciprocate his feelings,” he said sharply. “Do you think I’d cheat on you?”
Morgan stared at him hotly.
Cassius went still. “Fuck. You think I’d cheat on you, don’t you?”
Morgan’s chest grew tight.
“I never said that,” he protested.
Cassius swallowed hard. “You didn’t have to. Your face said it.”
He rose stiffly and headed back inside, the hurt in his eyes making Morgan feel like an utter bastard. He froze when Morgan came up behind him and looped strong arms around his waist, stopping him halfway across the living room.
Morgan pressed his body against Cassius’s back and buried his face in his hair, his throat thick with emotion. “I’m sorry. I know you won’t cheat on me.” He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “But I’m also certain Victor won’t give up trying to claim you again.”
Cassius’s heart thumped heavily under his hands where he held him. The Empyreal inhaled shakily. “I can’t control Victor’s emotions, Morgan.”
“I know.” Morgan turned him around and cradled his face. “I know that. But I can’t help this—this feeling!” He touched his forehead to Cassius’s, their breaths mingling hotly in the space between them. “Look, I won’t deny that I’m a possessive bastard.”
Cassius smirked at that.
Morgan groaned. “Yeah, it’s not exactly my most charming personality trait. But every time I think of Victor, every single time I imagine the two of you making love, it tears me to pieces!”
He lifted Cassius’s hand and placed it atop his thundering heart. “It’s more than jealousy or just wanting all of you for myself.” A burning sensation filled Morgan’s chest. “I feel like something inside me will break if I lose you again!”
A storm of emotions clouded Cassius’s face at Morgan’s ragged confession. He kissed Morgan softly before burrowing his face against his shoulder.
“I owe Victor, Morgan.”
Morgan stiffened, not liking where this was going. “Why?”
“Because he’s the first one who accepted me for who I am.”
