Isn’t it obvious we’re just best friends?
Adrian is my best friend. We live together, hang out, and he’s the best cake taste tester I could want.
Hugs are the norm, along with cuddles while watching horror films. I need someone to protect me during the scary bits, so why not Adrian? He’s almost a foot taller than me, so he makes a good armchair too.
Life is exactly the way I like it until Adrian’s sister drops a bombshell that leaves me questioning everything I think I know about myself and my straight best friend.
Can one kiss change everything? I’m about to find out.
Oblivious is an M/M best friends to lovers novella. It’s a light and fluffy love story, with a double bi-sexual awakening, a little bit of heat and no angst. None. Zip. Nadda. There’s meddling family members and two sweet best friends who are totally oblivious about how much they really care for each other. Oh, and cakes. There’s lots of cakes.
REVIEW:
Fitz own a cafe. He’s the chef and baker there where he specializes in cake as it’s a tea shop. Adrian is his lifelong best friend and a tree surgeon. They’ve both gone off to Uni but returned to their hometown and have lived together since returning. They are now 30 and well on their way with their differing careers. They neither have had much luck dating – for different reasons. So they spend most of their time hanging out together at the end of the workday. They are both happy.
It’s coming up to Valentine’s day and while Fitz has been asked out, he’s not sure it will work. He’s demi and he isn’t going to be up for sex on a first date. Adrian’s sister wants to fix him up on a blind date. Adrian isn’t comfortable with people and while he’s had dates and on-offs, he’s not had a serious relationship. Fitz has had a serious girlfriend in the past, but that didn’t work out. But as Valentine’s day approaches, Fitz offers to cook for Adrian and the blind date. Until Adrian’s sister Vanessa points out that if he’s not going to take the date seriously, they she doesn’t want to set him up. When asked why not, she pointedly notes that Fitz and Adrian are practically married anyway – all but the sleeping together, so why don’t they just get it over with already.
Well, this comes as a shock to both guys. But then they think about it. Are they a couple? Neither has ever been with a guy before. Would it wreck their friendship if it didn’t work? Should they try anyway? One kiss couldn’t hurt, could it? And what if it did work out? Is this why none of their other relationships went anywhere? Only one way to find out 😉
Well this was just a completely delightful and sweet story. Fitz and Addy are just so darn cute together. They are adorable in their cluelessness. Their families have all just been waiting for them to realize that they are a couple. It just takes them hearing it from Vanessa that they are in fact a couple that gives them pause. Like hmmmm, maybe she’s not wrong? Their trepidation over potentially ruining their friendship – one that they both rely upon heavily and would definitely impact their oh so comfortable living arrangement should things go sideways – was totally believable. But they decide to be brave. And boy does it pay off 🙂 Turns out they are compatible in lots of ways 😉 The thing is that in their friendship, they complement each other a lot. Fitz is outgoing and he’s an awesome cook and baker and he’s got a successful business going – mainly because of the support and encouragement from Adrian. Adrian is a much quieter guy- a bit socially awkward but not with Fitz. He never has trouble talking to his bestie. It’s super surprising to both of them that they aren’t as straight as they thought, but after some initial hesitancy, they decide that whatever they do, they will just be honest with each other and stop if either feels uncomfortable.
They don’t rush the progression or their relationship which ends up suiting them both since neither of them has an experience. They are literally learning everything together on this (well with a little professional help 😉 ). Their obvious love for one another provides the safety and comfort to let them explore this new world at the appropriate pace. Both Fitz and Adrian get better at sharing their feelings and expressing what they want and need from each other over time. Their families were also hilarious in their varied reactions – or more like non-reactions – to the realization that they are finally together 😀 The parents and siblings are all fully supportive and have just been waiting 😛 The whole sweet blossoming of this story is just lovely – no angst, no self-recriminations, a few surprises, and some very appealing cake flavors. If you’re in the mood for a super sweet (mostly due to the cake) best friends t0 lovers story that is sure to leave you with a smile – and perhaps a craving for cupcakes – then this one will hit the spot. Highly recommended.
