REVIEW:
Perry Yellow Horse is good with horses. Not so much with people. He’s learned to fly under the radar and more often then not, when he’s not doing his ranch work, his nose is in a book. Yes, he’s a nerd and owns it. He’d like to go to college, but he needs to help his family on the rez. He really does love his job though. He’s not so sure about Will Abbott though. They’ve had one drunk encounter, but Will hasn’t mentioned it and Will is also not excited about being at the ranch anyway.
Will Abbott has not had it easy. His mother’s been married loads of time. And as it turns out, her latest husband is not excited about Will being LGBTQ. He’s lusting after one of the archeology students helping on the dinosaur find on the ranch. He’s on parole and he’s got to keep clean – and so far he’s he trying, but it’s hard. He’s bored and sullen. But he does seem to like some things about Perry and when they go off on a job at the ranch together, things change.
While working some fence lines, Will and Perry can no longer ignore the chemistry between them. Perry hasn’t even been sure Will is queer until they are alone in the remote cabin. Then things really heat up 😉 They get into a few things they shouldn’t and over their heads in some ways. But they also stumble on a clue to some of the mysterious thefts at the ranch.
Perry’s hidden his sexuality but when it’s clear he can no longer do that, he has to come out to his family. And also to his bosses. It doesn’t go badly though. And Will seems like maybe he’s going to be there for him 🙂 When they get get closer to maybe identifying who is behind all the trouble at the ranch, they do stick together.
I really love this series. These characters are so real to me. The Native American cultural aspects are an interesting addition to this story. Everything isn’t easy for these two – they both have baggage. They definitely danced around each other with the posturing of young men 😉 Their relationship ping pongs for a bit with the story but as things heat up – both for them personally and also around the mysterious goings on at the ranch, I enjoyed the ratcheting up of their story. The stealth mode antics of these guys trying to discover the culprits was fun to read and kept me turning the pages faster and faster to see what would happen next. V.L. Locey is great at writing dialogue and this story is no exception. I loved the way these two young men learned from each other and balanced each other out. They were fiery and gentle with each other throughout the course of the book. They learned from their mistakes and took care with one another as they grew closer and closer. They deserve to be happy together and I loved how the whole gang rallied around them. If you are a sucker for first times, young love and happy endings, then I think you’ll enjoy this story. Highly recommended!
