Synopsis
Lionel, necromancer and police consultant, finds himself closer to the Devil than he ever wanted to be. But even for a necromancer, life goes on, and murder happens. The next crime scene is just around the corner, and Lionel will do his job… ideally without Lucifer looking over his shoulder.
After a traumatic experience, Lucifer knows he has to protect his necromancer, mostly from the other man’s own stubbornness and ignorance. Lionel is not quite as human as he likes to think, and to Lucifer’s great annoyance, Lionel hasn’t given up on his bad habit of running into situations without thinking.
Lionel doesn’t know how he feels about the Devil, and he doesn’t know what he wants in his life. Lucifer knows what Lionel needs, but getting the necromancer to accept that is the difficult part. And of course, there is murder happening in town, and it is not the boring human-on-human kind of violence. This time around, it looks like immortals are involved. Solving the case will require Lionel to accept who he really is while Lucifer wants his boyfriend to embrace who he truly can be. Lives may depend on it.

“You are so full of yourself you’re drooling ego when you speak.”
After a second of stunned silence, Lucifer broke out in laughter, the belly-aching kind. And, yes, fine, I maybe smiled along a little, damn it, because the Devil was like sugar: perfectly fine in small doses, but addictive if consumed regularly and in large amounts. And I, Lionel Ionos Hawkes, had gotten more of Lucifer than I could ever hope to chew. I was desperately, hopelessly hooked, and the withdrawal would break me.
When the laughter was ebbing, Lucifer had succeeded in shifting me onto his lap, and he’d started stroking my back. It was nice. His hands were always warm, and I knew the strength of them, the strength of his magic as well.
“How long have you known my full name?” I asked as I let my eyes drift shut and leaned into his touch.
“A while,” he said. “Why?”
“You know name magic, and you have my full name.”
“So?”
“So you can do things with name magic that I might not like.”
He lifted my chin with a finger, and I opened my eyes to look at him. The firelight made him look ethereal, but not in a faint, untouchable way. He looked solid, desire turned flesh and muscle and unforgiving eyes that could cut through all pretense with their blue sharpness, but with a touch, he might have turned into something else. Something real. Something outside the realm of gods and goddesses and great dragons that loved getting snowed in in wintry lakes.
“I did this with it,” he said and let his fingers fall to the necklace that still hung around my neck. I’d almost forgotten about the necklace.
“You made that with name magic?”
“Hmm-mm.” His voice echoed with the crackle of the fire, and I focused on his scent, the spices and the woody smoke. The flames brought out crimson and golden highlights in his too-soft hair, and I ached to run my fingers through it.
“Why?”
“Because that makes it the strongest I can make it, Nelly. You know that.” He bent down to kiss me. I had grown to love the softness of his kisses, when they were soft, but I pulled back before he could overwhelm me.
