He exploded through the door of Yi’s room, not bothering to close the door behind him, and groaned when he had to wait a moment for his eyes to adjust to the relative darkness inside. From behind him, Bai Qian approached, her boots booming against the marble of the hallway. She stopped beside him, her hands on her knees, ragged breath preventing her from talking. So much the better, Ayo thought. He had to figure out how to have Yi take that large pill. As if reading his mind, his companion broke her silence to ask, “How are you going to dissolve it and have him drink it without choking on it?” He shook his head, thinking.
He had always been good at puzzles and at solving mysteries. He could do this. His eyes finally cleared, and he fixed them on his friend lying still in the royal bed. Next to him, his faithful guard still lay, looking peaceful, almost content. Ayo moved forward and sat on the edge of the bed next to Yi. What could he do? How did he do it without killing him? “I can go fetch some water,” Bai Qian offered, but he waved her into silence. Water wouldn’t work.
It had to be something organic, something that his body would recognize as its own and not try to reject. Then there was the whole thing about the loved one. Phor had acted as if that was not something totally necessary, so Ayo wouldn’t worry too much about it right now. All of Yi’s relatives were also in that deep sleep and thus not capable of helping in any way. “I know!” Bai Qian’s yell startled him out of his meditative state. She came closer, and he stared up at her. “Put it in your mouth.” Ayo’s eyes rounded.
What the hell was she talking about? “Put it in my mouth? I’m not the one in a coma.” She slapped the back of his head not so gently. “Don’t be stupid. Put it in your mouth and let it dissolve in your tongue without swallowing. Then you can slowly give it to him.” With a kiss! He could give Yi the antidote with a kiss. The dream he had had a few nights before came rushing at him like a speeding horse.
Was the dream a prophesy of some kind? Would his prince turn into dust as soon as their lips touched? He dispelled those thoughts. He was an idiot. That was just a dream. Yi was only sleeping, not eroding.
