Exclusive Excerpt from Hot Wire “Where are we?” said Peter. “It is a small detour.” Peter noticed that they were at the head of a trail, solemnly denoted by a California Conservancy Zone sign. It outlined a list of rules. Peter pointed to the sign and read it aloud. “‘Park closed: sunset to sunrise. No smoking or fires.’” He glanced wryly at Nikos. “Aren’t you the rebel? ‘No alcoholic beverages.’ At least you’ve got that one. Spending time with me hasn’t made you a total delinquent yet, huh, Nik?” If Nikos minded the nickname, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he extracted a flask from his back pocket, offering it to Peter as they walked. “I am not so sure about that.” So much for keeping a clear head. Peter took a swig, grimacing against the bitter licorice heat burning down his esophagus. “Ugh, is working for my dad so bad that you’re driven to drink this shit?” “Ouzo is not without its charms, and neither is my work with your father.” He took the flask back, fingertips brushing Peter’s longer than he felt was strictly necessary. “Both have their perks.” Nikos took another sip before forging off the gravel path. He continued through the scrubby undergrowth easily, Peter scrabbling to follow him over the rocks and roots and branches that threatened to turn an ankle. He doubted his imported handmade leather oxfords were ever intended for a midnight jaunt over hard terrain. Peter and Nikos were steadily climbing, and Peter could feel his shirt sticking to his back from the effort. Nikos disappeared over a peak about twenty feet above him and Peter had to pause to catch his breath. Nikos made this shit look easy. “Listen, if you’re taking me out here to murder me, just get it over with and save me the indignity of hiking,” he called up.
