Blurb
What is destiny? Do we have the power to change the course of our lives, or are we forever bound by fates formulated by the algorithm of being?
And coincidences – are they merely fluke occurrences or are they the results of a planned chain reaction?
That is the story of a man who has run away from his past, and another who is running from himself. It took Marcus only a few punches to knock the cage fighter out. The crowd who lost money booed at Marcus, chanting all sorts at him. The lady boss in the VIP box was cheering at the money the club had just made.
But Marcus was not ready for what was to come next. A pair of hands grappled him from behind and they both tumbled to the ground. Having lost sanity, Ares had mistaken Marcus for his earlier opponent.
On his feet again, Ares picked up a broken bottleneck, intending to stab Marcus. The crowd cheered at his comeback and began throwing bets on Ares to win.
Gripping Ares’s wrist, Marcus yelled, ‘Enough! You’ve done enough! Drop it!’
Their arms trembled from wrestling against each other’s strength. Marcus managed to gain control, forcing Ares to drop the bottleneck.
Ares launched his assault on Marcus as if he was a punching bag. Absorbing all of Ares’s rage, Marcus let Ares vent all his anger without returning a punch.
‘Fight me, you piece of shit!’ Ares taunted.
Shaking his head, Marcus said, ‘No…’
Mistakenly thinking Marcus was patronising him, Ares tackled Marcus like in a game of rugby. Cushioning Ares’s fall, Marcus landed on the ground where his torso was sliced and diced by thousands of pieces of broken glass. Marcus grappled Ares in a bear hug to drain Ares’s bull-like stamina.
‘I taught you to defend yourself,’ said Marcus as he held Ares, ‘Not to pick a fight. Please… calm down already…’
Still breathing steam, Ares was slowly burning out. Eventually he tapped out. The referee called the game and the angry mob booed at the pair before the Crimsons ushered them to the cash desks to settle their bets.
The chatter in the room quietened down. Gently releasing his firm grasp, Marcus carefully lowered Ares to his side, avoiding the broken glass.
‘Once we’re out of here, I’ll take you home to JJ. OK?’ Marcus coaxed.
When Ares came to his senses, he was overcome with guilt when he saw Marcus’s injured torso.
‘Fuck, I finally hurt someone for real! No one has ever gotten hurt before. I’m… sorry…’
Did he just apologise to me?
‘It’s… OK… what happened back there? You looked like you’ve… lost it.’ Marcus said.
‘It’s just… that… I get these intense triggers during the bloom of the cycle. I usually have it under control, but lately…’
‘What cycle? Like menstruating?’
‘Hah… I wish it was that simple. It’s just… this condition I’ve had since I was a child. I’ve never told anyone because I don’t really know what’s wrong with me. My father does, but he refuses to tell me. Hence why we had another fight. He was having a go at me for cutting down on my suppressants. JJ clearly had been reporting shit to him…’
‘… But even when I’m on them, they do nothing during the peak. I usually hide in some humanoid dungeons. I fear myself, the destruction that I’m capable of. The rage today was something I haven’t experienced before. I just needed a release.’
Marcus realised Ares was more than met the eyes. Perhaps his brazenness was not ego or pride, but to mask a scared and scarred person. His larger-than-life façade was his protective wall. He impulsively held Ares’s hand.
Ares froze when he felt the calming comfort of Marcus’s hand in his. It was a new experience that he found himself gluttonously wanting more of.
Holding Ares’s head, Marcus gently leaned in forward to meet his temple. ‘We’ll figure it out. Everything will be fine, I promise,’ he comforted.
Gazing into the eyes in front of him, Ares believed every word. Stiffened by a surge of current, Marcus too, did not wish to let go.
Just a moment more.
Skin to skin, they conducted electrifying tingles, igniting tractions with frictions, causing wildfire-like explosions with their seductive tension. Breathing heavily, with lips inches apart, they gazed tenderly with spirits entwined. Fluttering and flustering, was this physics or chemistry?
Steering his lips impulsively close, Ares halted himself.
Shit… I really want to… but Henry… I can’t… What if he likes Henry too?
Fragile with doubts, fear of rejection had Ares neglecting to notice that Marcus’s hand was still on his head.
A beep on Marcus’s Solar disrupted their connection. Marcus took a look, and noticed his digital coins went up tenfold after winning the bet on himself. When he was about to break the news to Ares, he noticed Ares had lost consciousness.
Tapping Ares’s cheek, Marcus shouted concernedly, ‘ARES? ARES?! Wake up!’
