As we start the new can you share with us what your writing schedule is and potential release dates? Do you write out of order like do you have the ending written before the main plot etc…
Like a lot of things the past couple of years, my writing routine and schedule has been thrown into near chaos, but I’m trying to get my feet under me once again and my daily routines more regimented. We’ll have to see how it goes.
As for upcoming releases, Past His Defenses just released January 11 and I have Least Resistance coming February 15. Second Go Round will release March 15 and I am planning to have the follow up to The Doctor’s Heart in April. I have already started The Doctor’s Destiny. After that it gets a little difficult for me to remember, but there will be another novel in May as well. It’s going to be a busy year for me and so far I’m enjoying it very much.
As for the second question, I tend to write my stories in order. I start at the beginning and continue to the end. I have ideas as to where I want the story to go and usually, I have a few pivotal moments in my head, but from there, I just write the story. That’s been my process since the beginning. There are some of my books that I plan out in more detail. It all depends on how the story comes to me.
Title: Past His Defenses
“You have two choices. You can go on a fucking vacation and get the hell out of this station—and preferably the state—or you can sit with the department doctor and he can try to shrink that thick head of yours for a few weeks. It’s your choice.” The captain stood behind his desk, glaring hard at him. Robert knew there was no getting out of this. “You haven’t taken any leave in two years, and….” He slowly sat down. “Don’t think I don’t know what’s behind all this.”
Robert cocked his eyebrows.
“I know who Holly is. I’ve known about that ever since you joined my team. And I know what happened to you today. I get it.”
“Then I’ll be fine.”
“No, you won’t. You have been working yourself to the bone for years. If one of the guys needs someone to take a shift, you do it. Holidays… you work. The rest of the team loves you for it, but it’s wearing you down. I can see it.” The captain leaned back in his chair. “You’re a damned fine officer, and I want to promote you. You have great instincts and you know how to use them. Your integrity is above reproach, and I have never, ever, heard you complain about anything. But you need to give yourself a break. There’s a lieutenant’s position opening soon, and I want you to fill it. But you need to chill.”
“After a year in a desert foxhole—”
“I get it. But it’s my job to look out for my men. And right now, you’re the one who needs my attention. You have the back of every officer out there… without question.”
It was what he had been trained for, had drilled into his head from the first day of Marine training years ago. It was who he was.
“So now I have yours,” the captain continued. “And I say you need a vacation. Figure out where you want to go. Pack your stuff and get the hell out of Dodge. You’re on the schedule for two more days, and in that time, you’re to finish up all your paperwork. Then it’s goodbye Robert—for at least three full weeks.”
“Captain… I…,” he stammered and then snapped his mouth shut.
“You have a ton of vacation time. Call some old friends, go visiting, see buddies you haven’t spent time with in a while. I don’t know, but get yourself some rest. You need it. And when you come back, we’ll talk about that promotion.”
Damn it all. He did have to dangle the fucking carrot like that. “All right. I’ll see what I can do.”
