Hiro
When I first realized that I could see the dead, I never imagined that it would allow me to help save the lives of others and pull me into Detective Maddox Booker’s path. Through my ability, ghosts have become some of my greatest friends and allies.
But now, someone’s dead and his ghost is gone. Ghosts have sought my help for my entire life, wanting to be heard, but something is keeping them quiet, almost hostile as our search for the ghost of the dead man leads us to a small village. Even though everything looks normal on the outside, I’m starting to wonder what’s happening on the inside.
Maddox
Life is better than it’s ever been. Hiro’s by my side and has brought my best friend Reggie back into my life—if we can consider Reggie’s harassment (even as a ghost) a positive. And even Hiro’s horde of ghosts won’t keep me from asking him to move in with me. The only issue is that work is never quiet, especially when Hiro is able to dive into a whole new side of a case by speaking to the victims of the dead.
But when someone takes Hiro from me in the middle of the night, I know that I will do absolutely anything to get him back, and I will make them pay for what they’ve done.
REVIEW:
Hiro can see still dead people. Reluctantly, Maddox believes him. When things go awry, they form a strong team to solve cases. And this one takes them out of town, to a place that brings back memories, mostly bad. And that gets them in more trouble than should be possible.
Winters continues with her more balanced writing in this series. Maddox’s dead friend Reggie helps bring some levity to situations that aren’t that positive. Throw in a few more grumpy characters and you have a party. Well, at least a good story. Again, the stakes are high for everyone involved and that balances the book.
Hiro & Maddox continue to show complexities in their characters as they are working out the early issues of a relationship. It’s always good to see how couples deal with various situations – both normal and paranormal. I do have to say that Maddox is a saint, he tolerates Hiro having one-sided conversations with the dead and he holds his own, not getting lost in the situations. Hiro must be tired from relaying messages from the dead but he seems to be ok – you can sometimes sense he’s tired and it’s refreshing to not have super-human characters.
There are several arcs that are within the book and some that are over the series, so not only do we have the mysteries to solve in this book but we get slightly more revelations to our other characters and their mysteries. Not all, but at least we get to know some more long term information. I generally like not to solve mystery books before things are revealed. Some of the answers came early to me but the final outcome should have you thinking quite a bit about the gray lines between good and bad.
Winters is a pretty prolific author and she does re-use some of her tropes, but this series feels fresh and has been fun to get to know all the characters. The benefit of Winters fast output is that we don’t have to wait too long for the continuing adventures of the ghost whisperer.
