REVIEW:
I’m so glad I got to read this fabulous compilation of PsyCop stories and it has definitely slipped onto my Best of 2022 reads. For fans of the series, this is definitely a must read. The stories move about in time – from early days when Jacob was living with Vic in his apartment and Vic was still with the 5th precinct to stories that take place after Other Half, the most recent PsyCop novel. I always look forward to Vic and Jacob and this book was no exception. The evolution of their relationship and particularly Vic’s confidence in that relationship are also well portrayed in these stories. Victor Bayne is a unique and wonderful character and this selection of stories remind us of why we love him. He’s far from perfect and he owns that. Jacob’s love and support have made a huge difference in his life – just as Vic has in Jacob’s life. I felt like this was almost like looking through old yearbooks – we see the Freshmen Vic and Jacob and then the post marriage stories are sort of like they’ve moved on to their adult lives together.
One of JCP’s trademarks are to share lovely little tidbits of Chicago and it’s places and feel. References to Ford City Mall will bring back lots of different feelings for locals and the many incarnations it’s gone through over the years. Local streets and major intersections and disdain for the extremes in climate made me chuckle numerous times. I love how Chicago is almost another character in this series 🙂
This compilation of stories reminded me of all the things that make this series great. There is great humor – Vic makes me laugh repeatedly. There are tender moments and it’s clear just how meant for each other Vic and Jacob are. There are fabulous secondary characters that we get to revisit in this book. Darla and Richie provide some interesting contrasts to Vic – and their relationships have definitely changed over the years. I loved seeing Maurice post retirement. We get more of Zigler. And Vic training new Mediums as PsyCops. I just loved every single new and old reference.
Bottom line – if you are a fan of this series, you NEED to read this book. It feels like a nice warm drink snuggled up in a blanket kind of read. Highly recommended. JCP is a genius and these characters I hope will keep us entertained for a long long time. I can’t help but think there will never be a shortage of ghosts 😉
